Skylines are a very cheap, popular import. Have a look at them on the roads. Most of the ones wearing GTR bodykits and badges are actually just regular GTS or GTS-T models. Easy to find them under $20k. Just drive down Parramatta Rd and look at all of them or online at sites like http://www.prestigemotorsport.com.au

What's the difference in performance improvement likely to be between pop charger and NO filter?

No idea, but you wouldnt want to run this scenario in real life for obvious reasons.

Well I've got 25k on the car and the filter is barely tinted in one area - so I thought that I'd take the opportunity to maybe see what all the fuss is about with pop chargers and the like might be.
I gotta say, that with zero impediment to the airflow and over about 100 k of mileage, I cannot detect the slightest differense in performance.

So what's the benefit of these fancy air pipes?

What do you mean? You tried it without the filter and there wasnt any noticable gain over stock?

If thats what you were saying, I would say it has to do with the fact that nissan have already done a great job in getting the most out of this particular area of the car.

People with popchargers and the like are only getting a minute amount more out the system. Most cant feel the gain they do get. But some do like the sound, and should your air needs increase with the more mods you get you dont want the factory filter holding you back.

A filter is only ever going to make a couple of kw difference and that's at the peak. That's a small amount to detect with the butt dyno.

Nothing is really worth buying for 5-6hp... the sound itself is worth it at the price this mod has been going though. 98 USD at one stage until the wholesaler got his butt kicked.

It's real cheap and if you plan to stay NA it's great value. KW gains... nothing to boast about imho.

A 5hp mod is definately worth it in my opinion.

X2 5hp mods = 10hp!

A full 5hp gained is definatly noticable, like the crank pulley. people who have done pop, grounding etc and crank said the crank was the only one which was more than just noticable.

The crank pulley doesnt rely on airflow or air density etc which fluctuates with the temperature like an airfilter mod. Once you free those horseys up they arent going anywhere. Air filter relies on alot of factors to be right for it to work the best/ most noticable.

5hp= 3.7KW

You can't notice that! It's the psychology of modding and the sound that just makes you think it's faster. Well thats my take on it. I could be wrong!

I only just noticed the Hi-tech exhaust and that netted me 21rwkw. I noticed because it kept going after 5500rpm..not because my butt told me so either.

Maybe i've got a dull butt.... Might be a reason i'm gravitating to FI too.

I think the pop didnt get you a full 5hp. Did you dyno it? Plus your butt seems a bit dull if it only just noticed the hitech.

You are right about the sound and its psycological effect, but the crank pulley makes no more noise so it shouldnt be affected by it.

The crank will give a full 5hp, im installing it in 2 weeks and i'll let you know. Though my butt might be a bit dull as well considering I havnt been driving my car for the last 9months, we'll see.

I'll probabally post a mini review etc so you can form your own opinions based on local input.

Ive got 2 weeks to really familiarise myself with the Z's power curve/ characteristics.

Have we got a WAV file of the sound anywhere. I'd like to hear the difference. Does it snort like the proverbial pig? I used to have a car with triple SU's and hi-flow filters and that baby sounded like a wild boar on heat when it got going.

LOL

Sounds more like a higher pitch sucking sound as the air is pulled through the filter at increasing velocity as the rev go higher, similar noise to a vacuum, or hair drier, or turbo.

On my last car you could only hear it above ~4000rpm and it increased till redline.

I have been interested in this little mod for a bit now. I found the following URL from Nissan Performance Mag:

http://www.nissanperformancemag.com/june03/350pop/

It's got a dyno comparison and the article is quite positive in the results and conclusions. I checked and Courtesy have the JWT unit for US$120. It could be possible to find somewhere cheaper though.

Anyone else thinking of getting one?

sundog, I got my popcharger a week ago and I'm very happy with it, I'm not sure about the power increase, but I can feel that the engine is slightly more responsive. Also the sound alone is worth it, it makes me want to rev it beyond 4000+ rpm. And my foot has become much havier as the result.

I've also got the US-Spec airduct.

I also have expirienced the problem with the car stalling when you press the cluth in and let the rpms drop to idle. Belive me it's not fun having your powersteering gone when going fast. But a simple ECU reset has fixed the problem.

I got mine from performance nissan. got it within few days. Shipping was around US$40, i recomand that you contact them directly instead of ordering it from the online shop, it's going to save you money. And the bonus is that customs didn't charge me a thing

The hardest part of the installation is getting the air duct in. The rest is easy.

you should hv just take our OEM duct out and get 2x air-flow over stock, cost you zero dollors!! BTW this was recommanded by Peter/Nathan, and saved me 60USD + shipping!!

I think the URL I posted above has step/step instructions for installation on another car, an Altima (whatever that Nissan is in the US, a Pulsar here I think) on another URL. They recommend pulling the duct out completely and replacing it with the JWT unit.

Nuff. What did you mean by customs not taking their pound of flesh, was there a workaround or was it purely luck?

I could have done that, but it could have introduced turbulence to the air flow reducing the amount of incomng air. Also it would be kind of hard to attch the heatshield. Besides JWT + $60 extra for the duct is still a lot less then the other intakes.
