Default Taxi

On the weekend, I noticed a roaring noise coming from the car. Only happens when speed is above 70km/h and off throttle, ie coasting. When I apply throttle, the roaring noise disappears.
I am not sure if its the tyres as the rears only have about 3mm tread left until the wear indicator is reached. If it is the tyres causing this noise, they when only on off throttle and above 70 and why not on throttle and below 70. There may be some resonance caused at 70, but it doesn't go away at higher speeds, if anything, the noise gets louder.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any suggestions as to what the cause may be?
BTW, does anyone know how much tread depth a new RE040 contains (down to the worn indicator. Could someone with relatively new tyres / car please measue the tread depth and post back.

Thanks for all your help.

PS - my drivers power window died on the weekend also

PPS - the noise reminds me of a Falcon Taxi with 150,000km on the odometer

10/32nds is 8mm. That is the full thread deptrh of not only RE040, but 99% of road-going passanger tyres on the market.

Could the noise you're describing be the tyre feathering noise?

Sounds like it. Early stages I guess if it only happens at some speeds. At that particular speed the small feather is resonating making it more prominent.

certainly not the feathering - that problem is prominent 40k and below and particularly when lightly braking. And only affects the front tyres.

Is your problem from the front or rear?

Could it be induction noise from air intake?

Thanks David. According to your info, I have just less than half the tyre tread left until the indicator is reached. I currently have 20,000km on the clock, so I expect that I should get 30,000km, and I would consider that reasonable milage for this tyre considering how I have driven it this last year.

Apps / Mchapman, I don't have a feathering issue - tyre wear is even across the tread as far as I can tell with my naked eyes.

Frizzle - noise it coming from the rear, so that should rule out induction noise form the intake. I would expect the induction noise to be prominent on accerelation and not so on off throttle caosting. Perhaps and exhaust issue?????

I will try to book it in with Nissan to be sorted this Fri, but I'm expecting their first response to be "need new rear tyres", which I cannot accept with just less than half the tread still left.

I'll post the outcome on the weekend.

Hate to tell you but you have the dreaded tyre feathering!

That is EXACTLY the same issue my friend is having. Exactly!

So after many months of going back and forth, Nissan basically rotated the tyres, did a wheel alignment very different to the article released in the US and they will not change the tyres.

I hope you have better luck but get it in there ASAP !

Mike - how many km's did you mates Z have when he first noticed it?
After the wheel alignments and tyre rotations, did the noise go away?

Well I went in the car at about 18,000kms and it started to sound strange....I was sure it was tyres and other people thought it was bearings.

By 20,000kms it was crazy!

They rotated the tyres and suprise suprise....noise is still there! The tyres are just stuffed!

Yeah he is taking it back next week.

When he said to Nissan rotating the tyres wont fix the issue, provided the US press release and asked for new tyres they said try this for 12 months!?!?!?

Its pretty scary....considering most of ours fall into the date range that could have the issue. My car has just gone 10,000kms after 14 months so I wont see it for a while.

Left the car with Nissan all day to repair faulty window / off throttle noise / seat squeak and rattles.
Seat squeak is an known fault and was repaired.
Need to wait for parts to come into the country for the power window (I doubt that Nissan carry and spares other than consumables in the country as this saves a lot of money in storage / inventory costs).
No rattles recognised by their technicians on test drive - fair enough cause they don't occur 100% of the time.
Test drive also revealed no off throttle noise - hmm. I could hear it as soon as I got the car back. Now I have to take it again so I can drive the car and point out the noise to the Nissan technician. If he claims its normal, then I'll insist on a drive of one of the demo Z on the showroom floor for comparison.

Thought I'd give you all an update on the warranty repairs to my car.

Firtsly, the power window parts arrived and have been fitted to my car. Now the power window works like clockwork again.

I took the car back to the dealer regarding the roaring noise from the rear and took their mechanic for a drive. He said it was my differential. So the dealer contacted Nissan Aus and Nissan Aus advise that the noise is probably from the tyres as they know about the feathering issue and stated that "wheel alignment is critical".

So I went back to the dealer again. This time, they took off my wheels and put on some almost new 18"s all around to see if it is the tyres. Guess what - was not the tyres. So now the dealer has spoken to Nissan again and advised that the problem is the diff. Nissan Aus are now investigating the cheapest fix option, ie overhaul the diff or order a new diff assembly from Japan and replace it. So I now am waiting to hear what they will do.

I must admitt that my dealer has been very good at attending to this issue, even if I have had to make multiple trip to get it looked at.

BTW, Nissan Aus also know that the 350 could have a problem with diffs. Apparently, a Nissan Aus registered Z that they loan to the magazines for drives / comparisions had diff problems reported by the mag writers, so Nissan has fixed this problem at least once before.

Finally, Mike (NissmoR33) you had better tell your mate who has the exact same problem to do a wheel swap to determine if his problem is actually feathering or a diff issue.

And everyone else, if you notice any noises from the rear while coasting (off throtle) at about 70-80km/h, then get your dealer to check the diff.

McChapman - with respect to squeaks and rattles in the cabin, Nissan told me that they are only covered for the first 1000km. That does not sound like true warranty cover to me.
They then told me that they will cover you if they pull the cabin appart and find a loose wiring loom etc that may be causing the problem. But if they cannot find the problem, they will charge you for the labour of pulling the cabin appart and puting it back together again.

Seeing that my rattles are intermittent and each time I attempt to demonstrate the rattles to the dealer, I get no rattles, I'm hesitant to let them pull it appart - cause they may cause more rattles putting it back together again.

I guess its a case of better the devil you know, at least until the rattle is permanent.

Well it all took a twist this week.

He was contacted by Nissan and told that there has been a TSB released for the tyre roar....wait for it....wait for it.....

Apparantly its due to the traction control system.

How I dont know as its front causing his issue but lets wait and see.

Hope it all goes well for you. Get them to check it out incase thats causing your issue. You dont want to open your diff if you dont have too and get a new one if it is diff!

Couple of interesting problems and claimed causes. At least Nissan is actually starting to acknowledge problems exist.

Hmm. Nissan. Thats poor service, I might try another dealership if I get that response.

At Toyota they would fix squeaks on my 95 Celica which had a dealership warranty, and I dont think I ever had to pay for it.

If I do get them to fix it you can be sure im taking a digital camera and photograph the whole car with the manager standing there and if there is any new scratches then they can pay to replace those parts.

Agreed go to another dealer.

My dealer is incompetant as they stuff up something else when they fix something.....you know an eye for an eye....but they have no issue fixing rattles through the warranty.

Imagine a specialist dealer like the STi workshop in Melbourne! Oh to dream !

Mike I cannot understand how TC could cause a persistant roar. TC should not effect the car until tyres break free?????

Rattles are a real bugger. Can never get them to occur while at the dealer's premises, but sure as night turns to day, the rattles reappear a couple of kms after I have left the dealer.

When they really start to **** me off, I'll aske them to fix it if I can demostrate it. I do not recall reading in my warranty cover that rattles are only covered for the first 100km, so if the dealer insists that is the case, I will ask him to show me proof of same in the warranty documentation.
