Default Short report on redline gear oil in 350z

I couldn't find my previous thread so here's a new one. I've changed the gear oil in my tranny and diff to redline few days ago, as it was recommended to me by few other members, my car had around 22k+ km on it.

I should mention first that when I was draining the fluid from the diff I was surprised by the amount of metal shavings (and sludge) attached to the magnetic drain plug. Hopefully at the next oil change there will be a lot less metal shavings thanks to redline oil.

I’ve to say that I’m impressed. I taught that my gear box was already smooth, but now it's smoother then ever, down shifting from 3-2 and 2-1 have never been faster and smoother, before there was on small notch going into 2nd gear, but now it's practically gone. Also going into 1 there was a bit of notchines and I could feel the synchros engaging, now the shifting is a lot smoother and the synchros spin up a lot faster. By the way, this is all without rev matching.

Also I've noticed that my fuel economy has improved a lot. I think it's a lot more then the 3-5% advertised on the back of the bottle, but I've to do more driving to be sure. So I guess the drivetrain efficiency has improved a bit.

By the way, I'm using a mix of 50/50 mix of MTL and MT90 in the gearbox and 75W90 in the diff. I think I should have got 75W90NS for the diff since the VLSD doesn't need friction modifiers.

dead cold it's smoother as well, for the frist few days after the change it wasn't very smooth at all, but as the days progressed (and the kms), it got a lot smoother.

by the way, that stuff stinks, i tried to wash my clothing in washing machine since some dripped all over me, and now the washing machine stinks, how the hell do I get rid of the smell I've no idea, any tips are apreciated.

By the way, you'll need 2 1qt bottles for the diff and 4 1qt bottles for the tranny (2 MTL and 2 MT90).

EDIT: fixed spelling (I think)

You think that smells bad try the diff oil in an old car. Even worse if you get one that's been stuffed with banana peel.

Can't help you with the washing machine, I throw away anything I get diff/trans oil on. I know mum always says bi carb is good for removing odours. Maybe do an empty load with a heap of that in it?

LOL, My mum says Vanilla is good for smells?

Though I dont think most mums are any good on car / chemical related smells, might be better off going with dads suggestions.

Let us know how it pan's out after 4 - 5000k it sounds like a really good mod, let hope you've got the perfect mix.
Just a thought did'nt Z350Lover have a problem with this gearbox after changing the oil and had to change it back??

Keep up the good work.

Well, all I know is that FLY_BY_ZED (I think that's what his nick is, do a search for redline gear oils and you'll find it) has been using this combination for over a year with few other people and they don't have any problems.

Also today I had the oportunity of racing a RX8 from the lights, coming to the lights I've downshifted to the 2nd then 1st. Down shifting was never easier

By the way, the RX8 guy chickened out. I think he got scared of the popcharger

David... you were correct.... I did have hard time shifting my gears with the redline oil.... especially in the cold condition..... I am very happy with the oil that I am using now (nissan recommanded oil)

cheers,

richie

Which redline oil did you use?

EDIT: I've also seen Castrol synthetic gear oil which was the exact specs suggested by nissan manual. I suspect it might be exactly the same stuff as used by nissan since I've heard someplace that nissan rebrands castrol oils. I'm not sure if it's true or rumour.

By the way, in 4weeks, after my car gets fixed, I'm going to melbourne. I'll be staying at some pace up in mountains and it's very cold there in the mornings, if the shifting is hard like Z350Lover mentioned, I'll let every one know.

I'm 99% certain that's not correct. I used to work at a place that packaged Castrol, Shell, Nissan and many other brands of motor oils, coolants and brake fluids. It's not impossible however that any given Nissan workshop actually gets Castrol products delivered in bulk as opposed to their own brand stuff. Afterall, how many places do you see that use retail packs as opposed to bulk tanks or at least drums?

FYI,
Peter recommended against changing the Gear and Diff oil because of the issues they had with their Gear box. The issues were fixed by changing back to a cheaper no name brand simiar to the stock stuff.

I remember that. At the time I speculated that the high tech synthetic oils were too slippery for the synchros and I think Peter even agreed. That's why I thought the Red Line without friction modifiers might be a good choice.
