I want to say thanks to Stack and the rest of the guys for an awesome and well run meet. i know you guys had alot extra to juggle and organize with this track and you effort is greatly appreciated
I must Honestly say not only was it the most fun HPDE i have ever done it was one of the coolest things ive ever done in my life. out of all the tracks and road courses ive done this one is the first one that made me feel like i was a real racer!
i have always wanted to run a few laps on a NASCAR style track and you guys made that come true!
coming out of the stretch and carrying that speed through a banked turn is a rush every car enthusiast owes it to themselves to experience once in their life! also in my opinion i progressed and improved more this time than any other driving school ive ever attended.
and good or bad i got to experience my first off track! (kind of) i was coming out of early apex off turn 4(someone stole my apex cone
) and almost ran out of track, so i lifted off the tthrottle and all of the sudden the rear end kicked out and i got a little sideways and my instructor told me tocontinue driving off track to make sure their was no incident with a car behind me coming up to quick. it was at the very end of the 3rd session and the track was fairly gritty. also earlier in the lap a BMW apparantly blew an engine and i might have hit a spot or something. or if could have been i was lapping the fastest i had ever done an maybe got a little of Zealous. never the less i handled it fine and after i pited i continued the session very well!
driving on a banked oval is unlike anything i have ever experienced. i must say one obstacle i had to get over was the instinct to tap my brake before the banked turn. i would hit around 100-110 in the stretch and i would feel i need to brake to about 85 or so for fear of being pushed up toward the wall. by my last session i got over it and carried full speed a few times all the way through!
i have a few cool videos if anyone can host them
i do have some

did you have any aftermath from the event?
i had 2 cracks in my windshield a crack in my head lamp (even though i double taped them up) and i halfway melted the outer corners of my tires, now when i brake i get a loud growl.
how did you guys manage sunday? i know it had to be unbearably hot!
sean did you get any pics

my windshield and hood have been sand blasted and are pretty heavily pock-marked. i had a bra on and taped my headlights, so the rest of the front end is ok.
i also have the growl during braking. it's due to deposits of brake pad onto your rotors. my tires held up remarkably well, however.
sunday required staying in the garages or the classroom buildings at all times you were not on the track. even 30 seconds out in the sun on the pavement got the sweat rolling big time.
the nascar garages were truly god-sent. the garages alone made the event seem so much more "real" and the overall event more enjoyable.
i did not take a single picture as i didn't bring my camera. i did video some laps and also got some good gps data (speed, position, g forces, etc) during most of my runs.

the growl will get better, at least in theory. mine was so bad last time that i got the rotors machined. that of course fixed the problem. i don't have it nearly as bad this time, and seeing as how i have another track event in less than two weeks, i won't do anything about it until after that.

no the track seemed to be ok. it was blown off before we got out there
as far as the corners here is a pic of the oval /infield configuration
in a Z you only needed to gear down to 3rd for the entire infield some people went down to 2nd for the turn right before you get back on the oval (i think that was 7) going into turn 1 of the infield was the hardest braking point of the track coming off the backstretch
you begin to track out after 2 and get back on the throttle for that little stretch until the 3and 4 fish hook. for me 3 required a light brake and a lift of the throttle right before getting on the throttle and hitting 4 very tight. this is where i spun out my last session. i apexed a little too early and was running out of track so i lifted and then the back end spun out(i still think there was a slick spot). the rest of the infied turns were no brainers.
coming back on the the oval was neat. You basically let you momentum take you up the bank gradually. My first few times i wanted to get up on the bank too early and it got a little rough. this was also a passing zone so if you were given the signal to pass it was better to stay low until completing the pass, this led to the frontstretch you should be upshfted to 4th now. in my Z i got up to about 108. but i would either lift or tap the brake before i entered the banked oval turn 1. if youve never been on a banked turn you have the tendency to feel you need to slow before the turn or it will take you up to the wall
. finally on my last session i was able to convince myslef to carry more speed into the bank. i ended up doing a few laps consistantly 95-100 instead of 85-90 as in the first session. for this turn you would enter it high and gradually get lower as you would accelerate through. there were hash marks on the track for refrence. there was also cement patch near the apron at the exit of the turn that you would want your left tires to touch everytime. after exiting the turn you would track out and be on the backstretch. you would get back on the throttle and then enter the hard braking zone and turn back into the infield

baileyrx...the next event i am doing is Grand East course at VIR with the Mazda Drivers on June 18th and 19th.
as for the track, matt pretty much nailed the description of it. i was lapping in about 1:14, so it is quicker than say, south course at VIR. therefore, we were doing 20-25 laps per session, which really gave us the chance to get in a groove and try/learn alot. the infield is basically flat and fairly straight forward.
they did blow the track off a few times, but there was some grit (as to be expected) in some of the off-line areas of the track, especially low on the pit straight.
the banking is so unlike anything you can ever experience on the road or normal tracks, so i almost don't even know how to explain it. the compression through the turn really gives you the sensation that you and your car are doing something you shouldn't be able to do, but at the same time gives you the confidence to see if you can go any faster. by the end of the second day, i was flat-footing it through the banking and exiting at 108 mph or so. it was so very exciting and terrifying at the same time.
my first session around the track, i was very apprehensive and not sure that i was happy about my choice to be there. i now consider it one of the most fun things i have done in a car.
oh...the fact that we were able to keep our cars in the NASCAR garages and out of the hot sun made it all that much better.

sean what speed were you entering the bank at?
i felt just like you, that my car shouldnt be able to enter that bank and stay planted it was something i had to get over just like at VIR full it took me a few times to carry speed through that crest you couldnt see over on the backstretch after oaktree.

What is Rockingham's banking angle anyways?

I'm hearing more and more that people are experiencing some "sandblasting" issues... honestly, I haven't had a chance to read the feedback forms yet, but I wasn't noticing it when I was out there.
Matt - sorry about your windshield and headlight ... do you remember anything hitting them?
We tried to keep the track blown off as much as was feesible (once in the morning, once at lunch, and once just before the time trial)... I don't know what else we could do without shortening the run groups and blowing it down before each session (takes about 20 minutes for the jet blower).
This event was a challenge for us because we litterally had to do logistics for everything that weekend... The track provided the asphalt, a two-man maintence crew, and the Ambulance, everything else was on us: security, food, corner workers (how many of you were distracted by Amanda? Tell the truth!!) I will say this - they bent over backwards for us - basically allowing us cart blanche when it came to the facilities... we could have run the full oval if we wanted too. Except for the snafu with the food being late on Saturday, I think it ran pretty smooth... I think it'll be a little cooler in November
Keep your eyes open and keep checking www.timetrials.net for registration details on the Novemeber event. I doubt we'll open it up before July 1 - but don't be surprised if I send out a reminder around that time... and remember - garage space is limited!

no big deal about the windsheld chips. i had so much fun it wouldnt have mattered if it busted it out. my dad put it into perspective for me. i was a little upset about it and he said "hey thats the price you pay to play the game, you cant have a show car and a racecar at the same time. anybody can have a car they keep polished up all the time but not everyone gets to do what you guys did!"
WE REALLY COULD HAVE RAN THE FULL OVAL?????????? man you have got to let us do that next time. thats my feed back. maybe if we could arrange it for november just a couple times! i would love to see how it feels to put all the banked turns together for a full lap. i would like to see what comfortable speed i could do about 5 laps at.
and on top of that it would save my brakes
