Default Roebling Road Raceway June 18-19 2005

Tarheel Sports Car Club, Triangle Z Club and Mid-Atlantic Alpha Romeo Club had a combined event at Roebling Road Raceway outside of Savannah, Georgia this past weekend. From this forum I saw Eric1h, Lightning Guy, Bini2, BigSexZ, McDuck, and Stack. I bet there were others, but I can't come up with the names right now

Track conditions were very good, it was hot but not too hot, and there was a steady breeze. We were cut short by thunderstorms Saturday but were mostly able to make it up on Sunday.

It was very interesting to see LG in a completely foreign environment. Instead of the tight twisties of Tail of the Dragon, where he embarrasses 350Zs and others with his choppy quick thrashing, LG had to deal with the long, sweeping turns of Roebling Road. I think he learned a lot, he definitely improved over the course of the weekend. By mid-day Sunday his lap time was only a couple seconds slower than Eric's Viper. Definitely respectable for a Ford truck.

McDuck, Bini2 and BigSexZ were mostly distinguished over the weekend for absorbing large quantities of tequila, sleeping late, and showing up just in time for lunch, if then. Fortunately, they weren't even pretending to run; they were spectators. The only benefit of their presence (aside from the obvious charms of their company, of course ) was the fact that they burdened LG's truk with several video cameras. We hope to have some cool video from BiniStudios sometime soon.

Eric had a good time in his Viper, he was really tearing it up out there. There was probably only one or two cars in blue group faster than Eric, possibly a Red Porsche 911 and definitely Roddy in his blue Datsun 280Z (What DOES Roddy have behind the sheet-metal??? Kryptonite???)

Stack was having a good time driving Boehn's (sp?) hopped-up 300ZX. Stack, your lap time was just a tad under Eric's, but 4-5 seconds faster than what Boehn was pulling in the same car in yellow group.

Unfortunately,MHoward1 was unable to attend even though he was the event coordinator. It seems that Marty has recently been seduced by the Dark Side. He sold his Datsun 240Z (fortunately to a Z enthusiast) and has recently been seen in the company of a Miata. Let us all keep him in our thoughts.

Over all, it was a very enjoyable weekend. Everybody got in some good time on a very unique and fun track. Savannah is a great city to play in, pub crawling along River Street was a lot of fun. Check it out if you get a chance.

Brian

Nice write-up Brian!!

I've got to send a HUGE thanks to Bain (spelled just like it sounds Brian LOL) Williams for letting me share his, how should I put this... Mike-Tyson-Early-Days-Kick-AZZ 1990 twin turbo 300zx. With easily 450+ HP to the wheels, it was WAY more car than I reallistically knew what to do with. But MAN was it fun!!! Not only did he let me drive his car, he even chauffered me down to the event from his ranch in Wilmington, NC.

Running rich this weekend, he fixed an over-lean condition found in earlier dyno testing (when it registered a 438 to the wheels). On my fastest laps, I was able to enter the back straight at just under 120mph... reaching 140mph by the start/finish line and coasting from there to where I needed to start my braking before turn one's 70 mph right-hander. If it was my car, and I had slightly bigger *****, I would have pushed it a lot harder... as it were, the Bridgestone Potenza S-03's were never even whimpering (though the tread on the left front did seem a bit, deformed after coming in from a hard session LOL). I wasn't about to do anything with that car that could in any way bring any chance of harm to it. It's got SO much potential with just a handful of modifications (mostly safety).

BTW... Roddy's 280z weighs in at 2300lbs and puts down just over 180 RWHP. But mostly its so fast because it is set up so well that he can carry the long sweepers so much faster than anything else out there. He doesn't have the top end that Eric or I had this weekend, but he can also hold 90 mph in turns that we would be lucky to hold 70-75 in. Truly a marvel of engineering he's done on that car (thats why my 240 is going back to them when I have more money than sense).

Don't get me wrong... Eric's Viper was also one of the fastest cars out there, along with Roddy and Saturday's Chris DeSalvo in the blue Z06.

Word is that Roebling will be re-paved next summer just in time to be cured for our 06 date there in September.

I'm going to attempt to attach a pic that was taken this weekend with me driving...

Nice write up, I wish I could have joined but had SCCA duties this past weekend. I was able to come out Saturday just in time for them to cancel the rest of the day so I stuck around and helped a friend put his brakes on in the rain.
Who won the time event on Sunday?

Proud to say that Roddy Sugg's 280Z won Fastest Time of the Day...

74 ZSP John Davidson 350Z 1:39.960
------------------------------------------------------------------------
For those of you curious, we created our own little Z-car class we dubbed ZSP. Since there aren't many Zs doing our time trials right now, we wanted a class that someone could work for a trophy in. Since 240z thru 280z have to compete with M3s and C4 corvettes in BSP, it didn't seem fair. The more Zs we get running the TT, we may start splitting up the groups again... Z-Stock, Z-Mod, etc, etc

If you're interested, compare the times above with a few times I clocked:

Eric: around 1:29
Stack: Around 1:30 - 1:31
LG: Around 1:31 except when he had Vitacco in the right seat, then 1:36
Bain: 1:36
Roddy: 1:26

Sorry for the late post here...

I really regret missing this one. RR is one of my favorite tracks, and I love hanging out in Savannah..

Brian, good write up, and yes Roddy can be very fast. Amazing for a 30 year old car with no F/I. And Yes, the 240Z is gone, but 2003z from here bought it and has done more work in the past 3 weeks on the SR that I had in the last year.

Great write up, guys. I had fun even though I didn't run this time. Definitely planning to make Rockingham in November. Now that the Z is retuned, I have no excused not to run again!
