Question Sparco Comp. Harnesses

About a year to 1.5 years ago I purchased Sparco 3" 4-point competition harnesses for Driver Ed. events. It has a Cam-lock and the cam-lock will support a substrap. Driver Ed. regs require the same restraint setup for driver and instructor (if you have one), so both driver and passenger (instructor) have the same Sparco 3" 4-point setup. I have only done a handful of events and both harnesses are in excellent condition. This year the club I drive with now requires a 5-point or 6-point setup; 4-point setups are no longer allowed. So I went to the online place where I originally purchased my Sparco 4-point harnesses and purchased the substrap for a 5-point setup (for both driver and passenger/instructor (if I have one)). The invoice confirmed that I ordered a Sparco substrap, but what they sent me was a Schroth substrap. Initially I didn't like that but thought what the hell; it doesn't matter as long as it works with my cam-lock. Well of course Murphy's Law surfaces and the Schroth substrap will not insert into my Sparco cam-lock! So I call the place where I ordered them and explained the situation and he said that a year ago Sparco changed their cam-lock and went with a Schroth setup. Their website never mentioned that and to add insult to injury I have to pay a restocking fee to return them and pay to ship them! So all said and done it cost me $20 to $30 and I have nothing to show for it expect frustration.

Can anyone confirm that Sparco did nor did not change their cam-lock to a Schroth-styled cam-lock? Am I SOL!??? I don't want to have to spend $450 to $500 for two sets of 5 or 6 point harnesses when my two 4-point harnesses are in excellent condition and all I need are two substraps, which my cam-locks will support! Was that guy on the phone blowing me smoke or did Sparco change to a Schroth-type cam-lock?

If Sparco did change their cam-lock to a Schroth-styled one, does anybody know where I can buy a 3" Sparco substrap with will work with my 3" Sparco competition 4-point harnesses cam-lock circa late 2004/early 2005?

Let me know. Thanks!

I can't answer your question, but give Northstar Motorsports a call: 1-800-356-2080

They handle both Sparco & Schroth.

If all else fails, I have 2 sets of Impact 6-point cam lock harnesses ready to ship.

If you are using the OEM seats, you should be using a 6 point set-up. 5 point is for racing seats that have a slit for an anti-sub strap.

Well, after some phones calls I was able to confirm that in 2005 Sparco changed manufacturers and now contracted Schroth to produce their harnesses for them. I also found out that the Sparco part/product numbers for the pre-2005 harnesses are 4300 for the single sub belt (5-point) and 4310 for the dual sub belt (6-point). Now I just need to find someone who still has them in stock...

I have the sub belt in black if you'd like to buy it from me. I ended up buying a new set of willans so they are just sitting in a box. Let me know if you need any hardware also.

Glad to see you found a 6 point sub strap! So, when are you going to use them at a track?

I have a sparco harness and need to get the piece to mount it to the floor... Looks like a loop.

Any info would be great.

If your sub belt has one strap to make a 5-point setup then some people tell me that they connect it to the horizontal bar that is connected to the frame underneath the stock seat (look under there, you will see it). But if it was me, I would get an anchor plate and eye-hook bolt and get someone to weld it to the floor pan; which means that you will have to remove your seat, remove (or peal back) the carpet and any sound deadening material to expose the floor pan, weld in the anchor plate with threads to screw in the eye-hook bolt in to and cut holes in the carpet & sound deadening material to expose the eye-hook then finally put everything back. Then repeat for passenger side if necessary.

If your sub belt has two straps to make a 6-point setup then you can just connect them to the front seat mounting points.

As a note, I was happy with my 4-point setup with stock seats and only got sub belts because the club I run with would no longer allow a 4-point setup. Because the stock seats do not have a slit in the bottom cushion and because I do not have track seats yet, I argue the effectiveness of sub belts with stock seats, but I'll see what they say this weekend when I have to get my car Tech Inspected for my next event. With track seats I fully agree a 5-point or 6-point setup is best (and sub belts are effective).
