NASA at Autobahn this weekend
Well I signed up for July 22 and 23 to drive the HPDE groups. I arrived saturday morning and was surprised by the number of particpants. I was concerned that the sessions would be cramped with trains and slow pokes.
I was quickly corrected. I had a great day on saturday. My first session was the first time with my 350evo sways. My car would oversteer and understeer - no consistancy. But the track, while we did have about twenty cars in our group, was generally open. Though slow and frustrated with my driving and the car, I still had a good time.
After the first session I called a buddy (crew member for a rolex cup team) to get some help with the car. He suggested to increase my tire pressures and soften the front tokico shocks a couple turns or so.
The second session was fantastic. The car handled very well and I didn't drive too bad as well. I did, however, begin to feel the inside tire spinning when exiting a corner and applying the throttle.
In the third session I slowed down to learn the track better (there a couple turns that downright confuse me. I never felt like I had the right line. But the inside tire was definitely spinning during corner exits. My limited slip might be worn out... sigh.
I skipped the fourth session to have dinner with my wife and two of my three children (the oldest is at camp). I changed tires, loaded the trailer and headed off at about 4:30 pm.
Sunday morning I woke up at 7 am - two and half hours late! I live 80 miles away fromthe track and I wouldn't get there until 9 or so. Not to mention I missed the drivers meeting at 7:30. Then my son at camp called asked us to pick him for the day - family first. So no track time for sunday...
But I have another this coming weekend.
Overall, my impression of NASA is high. I think they are very organized (a little to much at times; like the download session immediately folowing each session - this did not give enough time to check tire temps and such). I would recommend NASA to anyone.
I did meet two guys there. One drove an S2K and another drove an 03 350Z. Great guys and I feel bad that I promised to show up on Sunday and didn't.
On a side note, how do I test the limited slip?
