Default Racing the Z!!!!!

Ok, after some HPDE's and track days I more then have the bug. I have worked some SCCA events, spent hours on end at tracks but still not COMPLETELY sure of where I stand with my car. I more then anything want to race. Not so much head to head but more of a Solo 1 style race against time. Just not ready to bump and bang my car just yet. Anyhow...other then SCCA liscense is there a way to get into it? I know i could do autocross rather easily but thats jut not what i am looking for. I have looked into driving schools so i can get liscensed for the SCCA events however they are super expensive!! I know this is not a cheap sport at all, but is there any other way around it to race without having to go to a SCCA event???? I just want to run a Stock class, maybe a lightly mod class, nothing major.... any help???????

depends how much money your trying to spend bill. if you want to spend under 150 its not going to happen at a track unless you either get hooked up, no track time, or bad track. racing at the track is not a cheap sport it requires time money and risk. if your not in the financial state to crash your car and fix it or replace it you shouldnt be racing. this is my humble opinion. check out nasa, and their are a few others that i cant name off at this time but are relatively cheap..

150 would be nothing compared to the $3995.00 for a Skip Barber Racing school on top of the hundreds needed for SCCA and that is just to be ABLE to race.

I spend the money on weekends constantly for track time with HPDE's or member days etc...... just looking for Solo type of racing without the start up prices of SCCA regulations.

Look up Time Trials sponsored by the SCCA. The events are on road courses and timed runs determine finish. It is much cheaper than Club Racing. The Chattanooga region is having one at Nashville SuperSpeedway May 19 & 20. You can get a novice TT license to compete. There is also a TT school and event June 9 & 10 at Talledaga Grand Prix Raceway put on by the Tennessee Valley and Alabama regions. A school counts as two flat track events and gets you a Level 4 license to qualify for hill climbs. CCR is doing one this year and TVR has the Crow Mountain Hill Climb at the beginning of October.

Car prep is more stringent than a PDX. I think you will need a roll bar, fire extinguisher and harness. You also need a driving suit and proper fire protection for hands and feet. Look at the TT page on the SCCA site for more information.

You are also in luck that there is such a club local to you. We operate out of the RTP area of NC.

We run HPDE's in the begining of each day, and then a Time trial series each afternoon. We run roughly $250 for a weekend, and offer a lot of track time. Competition wise we have a great class for the Z's and the like.

Since you are so local, I think I can add a few details here. We host a run for all Time trial participants at the end of each HPDE day. There is a small additional fee ($25) to participate and you do need to qualify. Our timing and scoring is handled by the lastest AMB system with transponders. We offer transponders for those who do not have them yet, but I suggest that if you have ANY interest in this go ahead and buy one for your self.
The time trial is open to drivers that have had at least two HPDE events and have been signed off to solo for at least one session at each event. All time trial cars are required to have a properly installed SCCA Time Trial spec 4-point roll bar with proper SFI high-density padding, 5 or 6 point harness (no older than 5-yr from date of manufacture), Snell SA2000 or better helmet (no M-rated helmets), a mounted fire extinguisher, and an AMB compatible transponder. HPDE participants are not required to have this level of equipment, but we do require a roll bar for all convertibles.
A run group will consist of a single 15-minute session, ideally including a full 10 minutes of hot lap We will make every effort to ensure time for at least four hot laps (three hot laps is the minimum number to be officially scored.) The best lap time will be scored for finishing position. In the case of a tie, the best lap time will be scored. Run group size may consist of 8 to15 vehicles (except for provisional groups) depending on the size of the track and speed deferential of the run group. Two-day events considered two separate time trials. If one day of the time trial should be cancelled, the second day be counted as double points.
We have substantial safety rules to keep you and your car safe. We cover passing, off track excursions, and corner worker/flag safety. The Time Trial Series is not wheel to wheel racing and is a non-contact sport. It is a timed event with scoring. Trophies are awarded each day. Championship year end points will be awarded per THSCC
calculator on www.timetrials.net. Additional trophies may be awarded at the discretion
chairman. Championship class trophies are awarded at the annual banquet.

The point system works like this:

finish 1 with 6 cars in class-awarded 6points
finish 5 with 5 cars in class-awarded 1 point
finish 4 with 10 cars in class-awarded 4 points
finish 3 with 5 cars in class-awarded 3 points

TZC/THSCC Base Classes On Scca Time Trial & Club Racing Classes And Rules Described In The Current Year Scca Time Trial Rules (TTR) And General Competition Rules (Gcr). We can add or expand a class as demand For a Class Increases. Open Wheel Vehicles and Cart Classes Are Not Supported.

Local SCCA regions usually run a two day school to help people get their SCCA novice permit. Here in the Cal Club region they run a "Super School" twice per year at a cost of (I think) $350. You have to provide your own car and it must pass a SCCA tech inspection (roll cage, current safety equipment, safe and reliable). Rent-a-rides for the super school can be purchased with Seven's Only at BRP offering the best deal using one of their SpecRX7 race cars.

The next Super School is scheduled for May this year.
