Default Beware 03 and 04 Guys-- Front Bearing Wear

I have about 5 years and >50 track days on my car. In the last month rubbing of the rotor onto the break pads has started to show. There was no play in the wheel ( front wheels them selves) like a classic wheel bearing going but boy on the track it had gone bad in two track days. Still the dealer could not hear it until I took him for a ride on the freeway on a smooth surface. I moved the wheel side to side and keeping the car inside my lane and you could here the rub.

Anyway I am covered under my extended warrenty. Make sure you listen for this.

My car is a 03 with 42,000 miles and obviously extensive track miles.

So did you get any signs of it going bad with the car up in the air?

I check for wheel movement every time it's up in the air, I also put my hand on the coil spring, spin the wheel and check for binding. Did you car pass both these tests?

I had no indication of play in the bearings when the car was in the air. The dealer also noted the same thing. But on sweeping turns the noise was increasing daily.

Hi Ray! Thanks again for all your help at Buttonwillow.

Is it possible that what was happening to you is what happened to me last December (after just over four years and 60 some track days)? See my post in this thread. The casting just came apart. Mine wasn't covered under warranty.

Just curious...how expensive it is to replace the hubs and bearings? I've probably got another 2 years worth of track driving before mine goes out (don't have nearly the same number of track days as some of you guys)

I am getting 3 of the four hubs replaced. There is no sign of cracking of the hub just bearing wear. I am covered under warrenty due to an extended warrenty I purchased due to the fact this was the first model year.

I replaced mine a few months back, and they're not difficult as long as you have the right tools. The trick is to rent a slide hammer to pull the hub once you've removed the 4 bolts in the rear - took me less than an hour for each side once I figured out what I needed to do.

My dealership charged $850 for the front two after the left one broke. There was no sign of similar failure on the right one. (I still have both of the old ones.)

I had 65,000miles when my wheel bearing gave up (the most annoying sound ever)

I want to indirectly thank all of you guys reporting hub failures. You're slowly making me feel better about spending money on hubs that I wasn't sure I even needed.
I think new hubs will be on my maintence list every two years.

I've taken off the front hubs when I removed the heat sheilds. It's a pretty easy job. Performance Nissan sells new hubs for around $140. If you run longer studs you'll have to get new ones also for the new hubs.

Havent messed with the rears, I just cut the sheilds off.

Dont mean to steal the thread, but I was right. As soon as my warranty went out yesterday, something broke.....I think that's when bearings go usually, right after your warranty runs out

Nissan counts it as part of the drive train, so whenever your drive train warranty goes out.

Assuming my dealership wasn't screwing me (and I don't think they were, they've been very good to me) it must be 36, because mine broke at just over four years, and they didn't cover it.

Having bearings last 20K+ miles on a car that's tracked frequently (6 or more times per year - 12 hours of track time) is a good thing. You guys should be thankful Nissan has made parts that last that long in track use. And to be lucky enough to get them replaced for free under waranty...

Bearings are normally considered wear items on a race car and are replaced based on a set schedule regardless of condition. SSC Neon competitors replaceed front hubs every other race weekend (4 hours of track time). ALMS GT Vipers replaced front and rear hubs after every race and we had to do a front hub change on the Sportsfeed/EMI Racing viper at the 14 hour mark during the 2000 Rolex 24 Hours. Ever changed a front hub that was so hot it burned your hand through a Kevlar glove?

I should clarify that it was the FL hub assembly that broke on my car, not the bearing per se.
