went to the Nurburgring on 04/06, vids and 87 pics
i posted this in the local NW forum, last week, but i figured that the RR guys would wanna see this to, so here it is:
so i payed a visit to the nurburgring on my vacation to europe. when i went there, it happened to be a manufacturer testing day and a 2 hr 45 min (cut down to 1.5 hrs due to an accident) public session.
i rented a renault clio sport (impressed me to say the least) to drive around the 'ring. it was 6 laps for 499 euro's with gas and lap tickets. one the first lap, i had the guy i rented the car from (rsr nurburg) drive me around cause i've never been on the 'ring before in my life, so i could get at least a little familiar with it. the guy damn good, he does lots of testing for oems, including the gtr, and did 7.5 min laps on a gixxer 1000. and HOLY SH*T the guy could drive!!! i was scared for my life about 73 and a half times!!!
i took a bunch of pics of the mfr testing. some of the cars include the gtr spec v (wasnt going that fast for some reaon), a gtr that belongs to porsche (they were really pushing it), and the lexus supercar. and a ferrari f430 scuderia, its sounds sooo bad *** in real life, so much better than in any vid i've seen!!! all the vids i've seen of it, it produced more of a scream, but in real life, it just roars, and its freaking loud too. a friend of mine took some vid on his cell phone (he has some really high end phone, so its actually a decent quality vid. he also made a vid of most of my first lap on the 'ring.
the 'ring is a hell of alot different in real life than on any game i played. the elevation changes are much steeper, the corners are tighter, it feels as if its compressed, things happen much faster
anyway, here are the vids and pics:

Congrats, I think you just got the first-ever pics of the new AMG Mercedes SLS on the Nurburgring without camoflauge
edit: sorry, thought I quoted the pic.
The day before you made this thread, Autoblog posted some camoflauge pics and specs but I don't think any real photos have come out yet, especially not testing photos

I got to run the 24 hr race last year with a friend of mine and we did about 15 laps on the tourist day before the race and there was not one lap we did that someone was not crashed somewhere on the track and I think that two motorcyclists were killed in one weekend.
If you like to run tracks then this is the ultimate track to put on your Bucket list.

yeah, speaking of fatalities, there was a fatal accident there the day before. apparently some lady with a caged porsche agreed to give someone a ride, since the passenger didn't have a helmet, the driver didn't wear one either. she came around a blind corner which had a pile up of a bunch of cars there already and hit them. I'm not sure if both the driver and passenger died, but its sad either way.
i was lucky enough not to have any accidents in my session. the accident that cut the tourist day short was from the oem testing from earlier in the day...

Wow very cool! I'm heading to Germany on a study exchange in a week, looks like you tempted me into renting a car while I'm there. Can't wait!
Awesome pics btw, they make me so anxious to witness it in person.
What was the minimum age to rent a car on the ring?

most places require you to be 25, the place i went to (www.rsrnurburg.com) didn't have anything about age. i'm not sure if there is a requirement or anything, but i'm 23 and they didn't say anything about it. you do need to have a valid drivers license though (common sense)

For the tourist days you just buy your tickets and feed it into the machine but I believe that you need to be 25 to rent a car. Also I would be very careful with a rented car on the ring because some rental companies have spies watching cars on the ring and specifically state that they are not allowed on the ring and if you crash it there you may have to buy it. If you rent a Siat you would probably not have a problem but if you rent a sports car some one may be watching.
To get certified to race the 24 hr I rented a car from rentracecar.de. They have all types of cars prepped for the track and you can rent by the half day.
They had a 350Z last year but was totalled out a couple of days before I got there.

not sure if you'll be able to do it at 20, limit may be 21 for rsr... to find out for sure, it'd be best to call and ask, they tend not to answer emails...

I was at the Ring from 24-26 of April this year, with a bunch of cars from the Norwegian Nissan 200SX club. What can i say, other than its a must if you are in Europe. Can also recommend RSR, nice people with great knowledge of the track. For more info on the track, check out this site.
