HANS Device
BTW that pic in your sig....I passed that guy at 140mph last year in the BBORR 2008! Really nice guy and his wife was sweet too...he does NOT use a speedometer, runs by his tach only and unfortunately got busted in the speed trap @ 142..which disqualified him and he was unable to race the northbound leg....was awesome to pace him for a few miles before I passed him!
Ok, almost all the main brands are now under $600. With used ones you may save $50 bucks if you are lucky.
So here are a few points on each.
HANS - The standard. They are the ones who invented the H&NRS. very safe and very sturdy. It has limited side to side movement though, requires harnesses, and the priciest of the three.
Dfnder - great system that's a bit cheaper ($550). It has an easy release system from the helmet. It has adjustable length's for the attachment and a great movable threaded band that lets your head swing side to side. It does require you to have harnesses and the back requires fine adjustment so it won't hit the back of your hemet.
Rage - Nice stand alone system. It lets you take it from car to car, can be used with out harnesses, and has decent movement. Down side is it cost a bit more, bulky, and takes a while to put on and get set up.

I just read all about the defender..looks like a nice setup...I'm gonna ask a stupid question now so bare with me...Do you have to have a helmet that has factory built mounts for the tethers? or can you drill and install them yourself? I have a very nice and expensive Arai helmet and would love to use it with the defender....
I DO have a harness bar and a 6 point harness...just want to avoid serious injury of my neck / head if the unthinkable should happen...
so thanks in advance for your time..I appreciate it!
If you should see Bill anytime soon, tell him I said hello..tell Him I was in the blue 350Z that passed him last year!

Thanks for the comment on the vids. I was going to see Bill next weekend, but he has hurt his back and may be out for a while.
As far as helmets. You can drill the helmet if you want. According to the instructions you have to find the centerline of the rear of the helmet, then find 229 MM from the visor pivot point on the centerline. Once you find that you move 153MM from horizontal along the bottom. then you need to find the center point between those to maks and move another 38 MM up from the edge. You have to use a 6 MM drill and not puncture the iner foam liner or crack the casing.
It would probabaly be easier to take it to a speed shop and have them drill it.
or buy one that is hans compatible.
Is your Arai SA2005? I thought almost all of the SA2005 and newer have the holes already.
