Default 18x8 what tire size???

Hello,

Looking at getting a set of track wheels for my 2005 G35 Sedan, found a set I like that are 18x8 +35. I want to run Falken Azenis 615 and go as wide as possible, I think I have settled on 255/40/18 but is that too wide for an 8" wheel? For reference here is a STI with the same wheels I'm looking at with Azenis in the same size...

255/40/18 is good on the 18x8. I will comment, however, that there may be better tire options for the street/track tire. I used to run the 615s religiously, but manufacturers have put out more tires to compete, and blew the 615s away.

Sounds like you have the tire size down , 245/40 will also work fine if the brand you want doesn't have the 255's. And like above, i ran 615's for a while and would never mount them again after driving on NT05's, there are many other/better tires for the same price .

Nice call with the NT05 and the 245/40/18 size would be a bit better for that rim size...Thanks!

Are you planning on autocrossing or tracking the car?

I ran 265/35/18 on 8" wheels and they were great for autocrossing. I hated them on the track. Being squeezed onto the narrow rim, the sidewalls were not as stiff as you'd want so high speed turns got scary. I put the same tires on 9½" wheels and the difference is night and day.

Also, I used the Azenis for about 2 years and switched last year to RE-01s (RE-11 now) and prefer the RE-01s. The Azenis overheat too easy and become slippery and greasy feeling.

I'd have to agree with Terrasmak - go with 245 or 255 tires for the track.

Depending on how much life gets in the way, I plan to do 6-8 autox per year and 3-5 Track days. So looking for the best of both worlds and staying within a $1500 or less budget for wheels and tires.

That should be easy. I just sold two sets of wheels and tires that would fit this request for less than that. Just keep an eye out in the competition forum as well as the wheel/tire FS forum. Also search your local Craigslist. If you are going to autox and track, the Toyo R888 tire may work best for you.

For good sidewall and such I would say put some 235's on there. If you want to look cool and stretched do some 205's and watch for pot holes
