Hate seeing this stuff because it gives a negative light on a great sport. There's millions of runs when there's no accidents and a lot of great driving that are not seen.

Those videos represent the one-in-a-million chance of an accident. That being said, I've never been a fan of "parking lot" events. A curb or some other obstacle 25-50ft from the course is way too close IMO.

The Vettes certainly highlight the danger of too much power and not enough experience in handling it.

The silver Z's owner is a member here.

Also, another member here had a run in with a vette at an autocross....similar (but less severe) than the blue incident.

Proves to people that it is racing and a helmet is required.

I always here people ***** because they require a helmet for autocross.

It happens...even had a few accidents at the final SCCA SOLO Tour at Nashville Super Speedway. One car totaled (STR S2k) and at least one into the tire wall.

Per SCCA rules...it looks, and I stress looks, like it is legal. Unless there are karts...you only need to be 25' (from outside cone). That doesn't mean it wasn't poorly conceived...or thought out.

The corvette into the crowd is the organizers fault for allowing spectators to sit in that area...

Some of the other crashes are pretty humorous or minor.

WTH was white corvette driver hoping to do there?

The blue vette crash appears to take out the workers....I guess it could be spectators, though.

In general I would agree however there are plenty of incidents all over the country every year. I'd realistically put it in thousands of runs with no accidents.

We saw car lose wheel at solo nationals this year. Locally in N California we have seen two course workers hit and injured and two cars crash into each other this past year. Plenty of close calls too. See reports every season of mishaps across the country.

While very safe for a motorsports event autocross is still dangerous. Especially for course workers.

This accident in Portland area shows how severe accidents in Autocross can be.

it always seems like "the friend" is crashing the car, infact - the person I got hit by, the friend was driving his c6 z06..

I will never let my friend take a spin in my car on a race track lol.

Still...... it's a fraction of the danger of other forms of motorsport.
It's about as safe as getting into a vehicle and pushing it can be.

Since I know all of the people involved in the Portland incident, I was able to ask questions that others probably didn't bother to ask.

#1 - The driver had a choice -- take out people, or take out cars. He had enough skill and control to choose the cars instead of the people. (He has driven my cars in the past, and I still wouldn't have qualms with him driving them in the future).

#2 - The car was a Porsche 911 GT-3 -- a car notorious for having the pedals offset towards the centerline of the car. You literally drive the car with your torso "twisted." It's very easy to reach for the brakes and get the clutch instead (and in fact one of the eyewitnesses stated that the driver looked down as if trying to find out why the brakes didn't work).

I was able to talk directly to the eyewitnesses (not the people who heard the crash in the stands and turned around to see the damage).

As far as the last, yellow 350Z crashing into a tree -- that was a DriftAmerica event held in a different parking lot at Qualcomm stadium the same weekend as one of the San Diego National Tour events (I was at the tour). During that DriftAmerica event, they totaled *5* cars -- the 350Z was the last, and the DriftAmerica event was shut down at that point, and they were asked to leave the site.

@ the carnage (autoblog)

Sometimes accidents are inevitable but that shouldn't stop you from participating.

The only person who needed a helmet was the guy getting nailed by the vet.

^You are making some assumptions....

I've had other people's helmet smash into mine during an autocross...actually cracked one of my helmets.
