Default Stock Seats vs Aftermarket Seats for AutoX and HPDE

Hey all. Last year I tried AutoX for the first time and loved it and am preparing to do AutoX events as well as a few HPDE. My car basically is only driven on the weekends as I used my B13 to commute to the train station for work.

Here is what I am thinking, I hate the stock seats. To be honest, the stock seats in my Civic SI were nicer (suede with red stiching and much more supportive). I want to get at least 1 seat, but I'm not trying to break the bank by buying a Bride or Status seat. I was looking at Corbeau and it seems like the best choice for me.

Another thing to consider is that my stock seats have the side airbags, so I am worried about that whole issue if I were to remove the seats (will the steering wheel airbag still deploy correctly? Will I have an airbag light?)

Obviously my top priority is safety, especially since I will be doing some HPDE events.

My budget for everything is under 1k.

So do I get 1 seat? 2 seats? or keep stock seats?
Which seat?
Fixed or reclinable?
Which rails and sliders?
Should I use a 4-point harness or stock belts? If harnesses which harnesses and which harness bar?

By the way my car is an 08 Base 350Z, and I am 5'8 and 185 lbs, size 38 waist.

I am posting because I am sure some people have been in a similar situation.

Thanks in advance!

Changing the seats will bump you up in class in AutoX.

Which seat? - your choice
Fixed or reclinable? - your choice
Which rails and sliders? - your choice
Should I use a 4-point harness or stock belts? If harnesses which harnesses and which harness bar? - dont run a harness bar, if you want to have a harness get a 4 point roll bar min.

I have a sparco EVO2PLUS with stock seat belt and it works fine for track events.

The Recaro SPG Profi XL will fit you well. It's about $1000 for each, and you will need brackets....

I used one until I lost weight...

With your budget, get a corbeau seat with their bracket and get a used harness bar and harness.

Ive had corbeau seats in the past and they were good for the money.

Youll probably have to do a resistor job to turn off the airbag light.

If safety is number one, then save money and get a cage then mount harness to it.

I would do cheap seat, harness bar, harness, then enjoy not having to fight to stay in your seat during events.

Don't waste money on seats, unless it's a used setup and you get the seat and brackets together to ensure it works. Plus you sat in it and it's snug and comfortable at the same time...

I would get a harness bar to keep you in the stock seat better

Thanks for all the responses.

I did not know a seat would bump me in SOLO.

Sparco seats are a little too baller for me unless I just buy 1 seat or find a used set.

It seems like yhe consensus is to keep the stock seats until I can afford a 4pt cage then get a seat and harnesses, unless I got with a seat and stock belts.

KingBaby, I have always read that it is very dangerous to run harnesses on a stock seat. Have you read or heard different?

Please do the research on the safety of a 4 point vs a 3 or 5/6. Four point harnesses promote submarining in the case of a frontal crash.

Thanks yes I def dont want to promote submarining.

I really want something that could hold me in place since last year I felt like I was all over the place during autoX. If I could stay in place I know I can do much better.

I guess it's either go all out or keep it stock, which makes sense.

It seems like the best bet for me is to get a seat and retain the stock belts for safety. If I do this then I will probably go with a reclinable so its stockish with a little more support.

I don't userstand why they would put such crappy seats in a sports car. There is literally no support plus all it does is make creaking noises under load

I can recommend the Corbeaus though, at least for me and my body type. . I had two different sets over the years. I thought I would miss the recline feature with a fixed back, but then never did and they were even comfortable to use for the drive to the tracks under 3 hours. I did get the MotorsportSeat double latch sliders with them, and I have heard great things about Planted brackets as well.

May I ask which seat you bought and you height, weight, and waist size please?

I really like the FX1 and judging from my wasit size (38) the regular FX1 would be ideal (Pro is 36 and Wide is 42)

So 1 am 6' (well, 5'11/3/4") and 180 lbs. 34" waist now. I was a 32" waist when I had the Forza.

The seats were Forza in a 240Z, and a Pro Sport in a Miata.

The Schroth Profi 2 FE ASM is a DOT legal and very safe 4 point harness system.

A harness bar is required for this correct?

I don't recommend harness bars because most are not designed to take the loads. Do the math: 20G deceleration on a 150 lb. person is 3,000 lbs. Would anyone here hang their 350Z 20' in the air from the middle of any of the harness bars commonly available?

Install a four point roll bar and then install a race harness.

Schroths are different and the only 4 point I would ever recommend. They allow for upper body movement and a bend at the waist like a 3 point to prevent submarining. They have to be installed correctly though to work.
