OP I learned to drive when i started karting at 9, its a very good way to learn basic race strategy, car control, driving techniques, and learning turn apexes and exiting, very good way to hone your skills see if you can find a track with karts that go up to 50mph, these carts will give you the best learning and practicing opportunity.

When im not on the track, im at the go kart track.
i raced karts of all kind and levels for 8 years, they are a great way to learn. driving schools never hurt. best way to learn though is seat time and don get stuck on one routine always try different things. I also raced legends cars for four years (oval and road course) what i would do in your situation is counter steer approx half the angle your slide is at say you guess your at a 45 degree slide counter 25 degree, remember all this is guessing and comes with experience. once i get my angle on i would feather the throttle back about half way, you never want to completley lift the throttle is this will unload the car and cause a spin. as the car natural starts to bring its self straight start slowly steering back straight but never make sudden jerking movent slowly and smotthly bring it back and also slowly and smoothly start accelerating. trail braking is also another way to defeat this issue but i would reccomend driving school to learn that. you always want to treat your pedels like their is an egg between your foot and the pedal and you dont want to break it. smooth is fast treat your car nicely dont try to overpower the car.

you countered too slowly just remember that the majority of what you do on track is based around vision and feel make sure you are looking way way ahead and your hands will react a lot quicker and don't get set into not moving your hands especially if you find yourself in a slide.
