What terrible news- Gurney was truly an American icon and raced in so many forms of motorsports. Beyond his F1 victory in the AAR Eagle, who can forget how he dominated at the NASCAR road races at Riverside? Can Am, Trans Am, Indy cars, LeMans- he was a tall contender in everything.

RIP to one of my heros!

Very sad to hear. I knew about his success in F1 but I had no idea how successful he was across basically every platform he raced him. A true American legend.

It's fair to say Gurney was an international racing star, as well as an American legend. Building a F1 car is one thing (see Haas F1); but actually campaigning and winning in the Eagle-Weslake at Spa puts him into select company. He also drove Cobras and Ford GT variants to victory in European endurance racing and was always a top driver in that series as well.

The guy invented a feature that became common on most racing cars - the Gurney Flap - aka a wickerbill. So not just a driver, a true American inventor! Sad to hear of his passing.

And he was the first to spray champagne in victory lane. That tradition started at LeMans in 1967.
