NoVa 350Z track build
#61
Main real benefit of going true style is more options for changing out toe arms for more suspension adjustment. Something to consider if tracking but also check rules on what class you will be running. Also depends on how low you plan on going.

Thanks everyone again for your feedback. I ended up ordering Fortune 510 coilovers from THM on their black Friday sale. I spec'd true style coilovers with 14k front and 10k rear spring rates. Should be soft enough in the back to run the square setup while allowing me to add aero later on. A few reasons I went with these over say KWs or Ohlins: First and foremost their facility is local to me in VA if I ever need a rebuild or re-valve. Second, unlike KW clubsports, they offer a 5 year parts warranty. Third, like BCs they are fully rebuildable and all parts are available. And fourth, it's possible to upgrade their 510 series to 2-way or even 3-way with external tanks if I ever feel the need to adjust more dials :P Now I just need to wait 4 weeks for delivery...

Would be nice to get them in time for my xmas break so I can install them while I'm on vacation, but my first event next season will likely be in March, so plenty of time left. Of course the LSD will need to be addressed during this time as well.

Trust me, I've considered it and have been pressured to do it by buddies who went in that direction, but for me it comes down to this being an "affordable" hobby and remaining enjoyable and stress free. Turning to racing would mean spending more time, $$ and effort to stay competitive and would end up feeling too much like a second job. While I do enjoy driving, I'm not that competitive. I get enjoyment out of a well executed lap, from experiencing how the work I put into the car translates into improvements on the track, but also from the social aspect of hanging out and driving with friends. I guess what I'm saying is that even after more than a decade, track days are plenty fun for me.
Update on suspension, I'm told it won't ship until around 10th of January. More to come then...

I got the coilovers installed, I dropped the front from 26.5" ground to top of fender opening to 25.5", one inch drop. On the rear I went from 27.75" to 25.75", a 2" drop, to compensate for how light the rear end is now that the car is gutted. Overall the drop netted me additional 1.5-2 degrees of camber in the back and 1-1.5 degrees in the front. I'll have to let it settle a bit to get final numbers. Depending on where those land I might go ahead and install adjustable control arms now or hold off for a bit and see what the tire wear is like without them.
I also removed the diff and it's ready to ship to Z1 for upgrade. From what they told me on the phone it'll take 4-5 weeks to come back, so hopefully it'll be back before March so it's ready for March track events.
No pics yet, it was too late and I was too tired when done to take any, I'll try to grab some next weekend.

Got the headlight covers installed today. Used 8 pin plugs out of an Infinity to plug into existing headlight harness for the leds. Had to modify the plugs slightly to fit and of course rewire. Weight difference per light is significant to say the least, the HID units are heavy, I'll have to weight them but these are a couple lbs each at most. The leds are not road legal driving lights, but enough to run at the truck during dusk sessions or move around the paddock after dark.
Here's how the car sits with coilovers after it settled a couple of weeks. Front is finger height, rear is less than finger height.
Still waiting on the diff to come back from Z1, hopefully this week. Also still have a front lip to install and I'm going to redo the pass side seat mount to lower the pass seat so taller people like me can fit in it.

was the headlight swap only for weight savings?
I found a set of 'hurting' headlights and gutted everything but the mounting tabs and lenses and I think it was 4lbs per light (8.6lbs total) ... not massive but every little bit helps, especially over the front end where weight gets harder and hard to remove.

How do you like the fortunes? Speaking of weight - I think I dropped 5 to 10lbs off each corner when I went with mine.

As you said, any bit helps. I didn't weight the stock suspension vs. the coilovers but they are definately lighter. The OEM xenon headlights in boxes weight total of 25lbs, so probably 5lbs worth of box and padding and 10lbs per light. So there's at least a 6-7lbs savings per light.
I listed the stock suspension for sale here
https://my350z.com/forum/suspension/...27k-miles.html
and I have a listing for the stock muffler and exhaust for free if anyone in DC area would like to pick it up before it goes to the dump

To be fair, I was comparing the new fortunes to my old eibach / tokico setup ... from my record I dropped 26lbs by the switch

2 weeks until the first event of the season (Summit Point) and the car is finally ready. Got the diff back, installed all the goodies and threw it back in the car.
Me and a buddy taking turns driving around in circles to break it in before flushing the fluid
Also ended up rolling the rear fenders to make sure they don't cut into the tires. Better safe than sorry.
Still having a problem with turn signals turning on when I turn on the lights, but I'll post that one in a separate thread.
