Performance Nissan Racing Runs Upfront at the VIR
250 and the Barber
Park 250
October 12, 2004 – Rosamond CA
All three of the Performance Nissan Racing 350Zs ran
fast and upfront at
the back- to- back running of the Grand Am Cup VIR
250 on October 2nd
and the Barber Park 250 on October 9th.
At the Virginia International Raceway, the #13
driven by Anders Hainer
and Boris Said experienced some problems in the
morning warm-up and was
unable to qualify. The #33, driven by Mike Cronin
Jr. qualified in 5th
place with the #23 driven by Blake Rosser following
in 9th place.
As the race strategy developed, the #13 with Boris
Said at the wheel was
running in third place late in the race when he ran
out of fuel due to a
glitch with the fueling rig. The #33 with Mike
Borkowski substituting
for Stu Hayner was in the hunt and finished a strong
5th place. Kelly
Collins and Blake Rosser did a great job keeping the
#23 in 6th place
despite a brake problem that plagued them late in
the race.
The team arrived at the stunningly beautiful Barber
Motorsports Park
with none of the drivers ever having been to that
track before. All the
drivers quickly got up to speed during the promoters
test day on
Thursday and were ready to get down to business on
Friday. The cars were
sorted out and ready for qualifying Saturday morning
when the rain
began. The crew scrambled to change the cars to a
rain set-up for the
morning practice session and the cars ran great in
the rain. An error by
the team with the qualifying paperwork put all three
cars at the back of
the field for the race. All three cars were running
in the top 10 within
the first 15 laps of the race. The #13 with Anders
Hainer and Boris Said
had moved into 3rd place with 20 laps to go when
Boris was hit from
behind and spun, moving him down to 12th. Boris
roared back to a 7th
place finish. The #23 with Blake Rosser and Kelly
Collins had struggled
with an electrical issue the last half of the race.
They both did a
great job keeping the car in a competitive spot,
finishing 12th. Mike
Cronin Jr. had a fantastic drive and kept the #33
upfront. Stu Hayner
took over and avoided traffic and trouble to bring
the #33 home in 8th
place.
All in all, it was an up and down 2 races for the
Unitech
Racing/Performance Nissan Racing team. Neither track
favored a handling
car, so it was an uphill battle for the Nissan 350Z.
The team was very
pleased at the progress that was made at both races
and is looking
forward to the finale at the California Speedway in
Fontana October
29th-31st.
