This is good stuff.

I've got an '05 with just cruise control and I will be upgrading to the '06+ with audio + cruise control and light illumination.

I already ordered and received the new cruise and audio switches. I'm ordering the torx bolts and 2006+ spiral cable for a plug and play installation.

I've never taken apart a steering wheel, nor do I have a the drill to take off the air bag. I'm going to work on finding someone or figure how to take it off myself.

I'll be back with an update in a few weeks on the installation.

Question!

Can you route a new wire through the spiral cable?

08350zboy...Was it simple plug n play or was there extra wiring involved? I have all the parts, but want to make sure I'm prepared for the install. Any input or advise would be much appreciated.

Tks

I never took apart the spiral cable but I would think it would not be easy.

I have an Enthusiast '03 with cruise control - there seems to be some conflicting information here. If I wanted to do this, what would be the simplest way to accomplish the modification? Illumination doesn't really interest me.

Same thing just happened to me and I had to post-pone the install. I got the first one out okay, but i completely stripped the second one and had to stop. Any ideas how to get it out? Would greatly appreciate it, so I don't destroy my car in the process.

Well, thanks for the help. I ended up bending the bracket inward and I have no idea how to bend it back so I can access the bolt. May be time to take it to a shop...

Hey guys,

Reviving the thread.

Quick question:
I have an 03 touring Z. Would it be possible to buy an 06+ steering wheel with both Cruise Control and Volume control and simply swap the wheels and wire everything up?
I plan on doing so with the pac controls and an aftermarket pioneer double din.

I would just like confirmation before proceeding.

Thanks.

The 03 didn't come pre-wired for audio control, You will have to add & run the wires yourself from the spiral cable connector to the stereo .

I installed the 06 Z audio controls in my 05 and used the SWI-X. I was able to get the lighting to work, and the cruise works fine (interestingly, the cancel and on/off buttons are swapped on the 06, but they work as labeled...I never liked how the original controls were layed out).

I used the lighting wires (there are 2, one supplies power and one controls the ground resistance for the dim level) at the VDC off switch. If someone had a base model, then I think the radio would be the easiest secondary place to get to tap the 2 lighting wires.

Now, the one issue I ran into is that the 05 spiral cable has 7 pins, whereas the 06 controls have 8 wires (the plug is the same, it is just short a pin). With the SWI-X, one wire from the steering switch must be grounded, so I grounded it to a screw in the steering wheel. I noticed the steering wheel tested as a really bad ground, so it does not surprise me that my SWI-X is a bit inconsistent in operating right now. I ordered the 2006 spiral cable on Monday ($30 from the dealer), which I assume will have 8 pins instead of the 7 I have now, so I can run the ground through the spiral cable and ground it properly in the dash. I hope that is my issue, at least.

Either way, the 06 controls look nice with the lighting.

Whats up I recently got an 08 steering wheel and installed it into my 03 z with cruise control and the cruise control works perfectly, i have not installed a pac controller so my audio controls are not working yet,

But my question is how do i get the Lighting to work, I really want the control to light up, I swapped both the CC and Audio Controls from the 08 wheel to my 03 Wheel

I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to say thanks to you and also "aust350z" for the instructions and help to get this done.

I'm in the UK with a 2005 uk gt spec car - it had cruise but no steering radio controls.

So I read your guides in detail, Got the trim with the steering buttons 2nd hand and got stuck in. Luckily, my car was pre wired from the spiral cable to the radio, so once I had added the buttons to the steering wheel, putting the pins in the right position in the connector behind the airbag (in the steering wheel) and put it all back together, it worked!

These are non illuminated, as it would have been from factory in 2005. Really pleased so thanks for your help guys
