Default Changing brake pads...

Hey guys like you all know the front stock brake pads release brake dust like crazy. I want to get some after market pads so i will not have to wash my car every 2 days. For right now i just want to get the front wheels done since the rear pads are not that bad. Would that be ok to drive with different pads for a while? (like front and rear) Also what brake pads should i get i have no clue which ones are good that do not release so much brake dust? pleaes help.

You can run diff. pads in front and rear with no problem at all. I have the Hawk HPS pads on the front and love the low dust of them. The stopping power is great too. Takes about 6-8 weeks to get the same amount of dust as 4 days with OEM pads. I believe they are about $75 for set of fronts.

i think tirerack has them for $58 or $68. Make sure you have bedded the brakes properly or they will squeal like a MF'er. I installed them, bedded them, and they are essentially silent. Better stopping power and literally no dust at all. Installing the pads on the Z has to be one of the easiest jobs possible, so don't pay someone to do it. You little if any machanical prowess to make the swap, good luck.

its a way to break in the pads, im pretty sure theres instructions with the pads on how to do it. its basically a series of braking from different speeds and stuff, takes like 15-20 minutes.

Whoops...changed my brakes myself to Hawks earlier today before reading this. I did do my own series of braking tests to try them out though (nothing serious). I've driven 30 city miles since and no noises so far....

Default I recommend turning the rotors...

when replacing the brake pads. Its convenient to do while the wheels are off. For performance its best to by fresh pads on a turned rotor.

I had that problem with my front OEM pads, after I overheated them when bedding my back pads. They were toast; I had to replace them. Have you driven them on a track lately or something like that?

On second thought, if you never bedded your pads the first time (sounds like you didn't) that's probabally a good place to start. As mentioned before, usually the pads come with instructions. Unfortunately, my project mu pads had instructions in japanese, so I went with a meathod I found on the stoptech website (but can't seem to find again). A series of 10 stops from 60-10 mph, at about 80% brakes, then cool the brakes down to ambient temperature. Then another series of 10 stops from 60-10, just like the first. The first set of stops is to build up a transfer layer of brake pad material on your brake rotors. The second is to cook off some of the resin left over in the brake pads. Your brakes will get hot, very hot. You'll smell them, probabally starting around the fifth stop, and you'll experience some fade as well. Don't let the car come to a stop while the brakes are applied, until they've cooled down again. My advice: Don't touch your brake rotors to see if they've cooled down. After driving around for about five minutes after the first set of stops, I parked for a second and touched my fingertips to my front brake rotor... and burned the HELL out of them. So, learn from my mistake!

Once you're done you should have a slight layer of gray material on your brake rotors, this is the material from your brake pads. Properly bedding in your pads will increase your stopping power, and also help with pad and rotor wear. And in most cases, get rid of that squeak!

I had to bed my Hawk HPS pads in twice to eliminate the squeaks. After the first time, they would squeak at low speed stops; ok so far after the second bed in (~600 miles)--loving the extremely low dust!

Hawk pads, no dust, no squeal.

I use a brake quieter "glue", is a blue spray you cover the back of the pads with, let it dry to a "tacky" feel and then you put them on. Been using this for years (a can goes a long way), never had a break squeal on me. (Why mess with sucess).

I would say the brand but I am at work...

Check out my review of all the pads I used before.

Hawk HPS, Satisfied Pro Ceremic, Project Mu B-force.

I recently ordered Project Mu NS pads. I have not received them yet but once I install them, I will post an update.

https://my350z.com/forum/brakes-and-suspension/117664-update-on-project-mu-brake-pads.html

I say Project Mu B-Force pads are the best I used so far.

As for Hawk HPS, you will get different answer. I did not have squeak on mine but I know many other members hads brake noise issue.
It looks like its hit & miss.
