Front Discs Need Replacing???
Guys,
Just finished washing my car and noticed on the front discs, I can "feel" the edge of the discs. Does this mean I need new discs or I might be able to tune it when I change the brakes.
I have 23.5k miles and never change the brakes on this car yet (don't drive that aggressively). The back discs, I can barely feel the edge of the outer discs.
Btw, where can I get the best price for hawk pads?
Tony

I suppose you are talking about the worn area: the area which the brake pad presses against? It should have a ridge because the pad presses against a portion of the rotor, not the entire rotor. When it come time for new pads, the rotors may be able to be turned, and used again.
that is what davidv is talking about. When 2 things rub at each other ull get some shavings. While the brake pad is softer than the rotor, itll still eat away some. You can get it resurfaced if its bothering you. You should change them if when you give it brakes, ur whole car and steering wheel start to shake..
FYI - when the rotors are worn by 2mm, ie 1mm on either face, then they are technically out of spec.
I replaced my front rotors at about 40,000km as the lip on the rotor looked to be about 1mm on each side. Once off the car, I measure the rotors with a set of calipers and I still had 0.5mm (or 0.25mm on each side) to go before they were out of spec.
BTW, the standard rotors new are 24mm and they are out of spec once below 22mm.
In reality though, once below 22mm, you could just turn the rotor and get a longer life out of them, as the caliper will push further than 1mm on each side, so the brakes will still work ok at 22mm.

Don't always believe what you hear.
