Default Cant be right!!

I got 31k miles on my Z. My VDC, brake, and SLIP light kept coming on outta nowhere and staying on. Took it to the dealership and they said i needed new pads and my rotors to be turned. Said it was gonna be like $280. I was kinda pissed that i needed this service done with only 30k miles but you know, whatever. Get a call later in the day from the service writer and he tells me he cant turn the rotors because theyre at 20.8mm and they cant go below 20mm legally so I end up spending close to $600 on new pads and rotors. WTF is this sh*t. Only 30,000 miles and new brakes already.....The guy told me that the Z car needs new pads every 25k miles. Is this right? This is my first sports car so every other vehicle i had i put 50-75K miles on it with no brake problems whatsoever. You guys do the same thing?

Your pads and rotors have nothing to do with those lights. I would guess you have a bad wheel speed sensor.

They stuck it to you !

And they are feeding you a bunch of crap.

The slip indicator has nothing to do with brake pads. And if the service writer knows so much about requirements for Z brakes, how could he not know his brake lathe wouldn't handle it.

Unless you do half your driving on a road coarse, there is no reason you should need brakes at 30K.

I also called another dealership just to confirm what i was told and they told me the same story new pads at 25k miles but if you do happen to go 35k miles then you need new rotors or they will get warped very quickly.

On my fronts only, I had new pads at 30k and had my rotors turned.

I've heard of a lot of nissan dealers screwing people over on rotors.

According to my service manual the minimum thickness of a non-track front disc is actually 22.0mm though.

Next time get yourself some hawk pads.

The mechanic said to me "you know your pads didn't need to be changed?" "yeah.... just do it"

As far as how often? You probably drive the Z a little bit harder/more aggresively then you did your other cars. I know I do.

Well then 30k sounds right for pads. Stock pads have a lot of bite and wear down quick, kind of like the tires. For rotors though, I had a dealership straight up tell me they couldn't turn my rotors. I took it to another dealership and they said we can turn those no problem. Go figure. 3k miles on the turned rotors so far no problems at all.

I had no problems with my brakes or any lights at 30K and I replaced the rotors with slotted rotors, the pads with Hawk HPS and the lines with SS for about $300. Did the work myself, but I just did it to improve braking, I didn't need new brakes. You got hosed...Sorry man.

Sounds about right. Most people on here can agree you will get about 20-25K out of your OEM brakes. I just had the same thing done to my 03 at 17,500 miles but I opted for the Stoptech Stage II which is the same price as what you paid.

Low brake fluid level will trigger the VDC, SLIP and BRAKE lights to come ON.

This will happen every time the brake pads are worn.

As for turning rotors, most of the time it's not necessary. Just strap new pads and do a proper bed-in...

Correct, I made the assumption fluid levels were maintained at normal levels.

44,000 miles on my original pads and rotors and they are fine.

Some owners might get 22,000 miles, while others 66,000. Depends on how you drive.

I hope nobody here actually adds brake fluid to their brake system. Only when it is flushed should we put any more fluid. Otherwise, "regular people" will wear their pads down to the backing plates...
