Default Noisy Hawk pads.

I installed a set of Hawk HPS pads front and rear and noticed that they seem to be dragging a bit. I waited a couple weeks thinking that it would go away but it's still there. The noise it like a very slight metallic scraping..almost like a SHOOOSSSHHH sound. Anybody else get this noise w/ these pads??

You guys need to apply squeal reducer. I had the same problems as you guys, but I redid them with the reducer and it basically eliminated 95% of the squeals and squeaks.

It's not something that has to do w/ the rear of the pad. My prob. is that the pad seems to be dragging on the rotor.

i'd take them out and reinstall them...something's not right if they drag on the rotors. Hawks pads are known to squeal a bit, i used oem spec pads from Satisfied, very low dust and no squeal. Excellent bite and inexpensive. Make sure you bed them in correctly afterwards.

ANOTHER thing to consider is the operating temp that they are under - if they are not under the right temp, then they will make noise

make sure you guys are using the backing plates, and also bleed your brakes to ensure your caliper is getting full extension when on and off the pedal

Bed the brakes, if done correctly, you will have little or no noise problems.

You might also check your dust shield. Sometimes the fronts are pushed in a bit and will rub against the rotors.

I installed HP+ pads last weekend and made 10 runs from 60mph to 10mph with the ABS doing it's job. I don't have much of a squeek or squeel problem. In 2 days I'll be at Summit Point to race at Shenendoah, so I'll try to remember to report back here if I have any more noise.

Yeah, I did. I'm going to bleed them tomorrow and see if that helps...and yes backing plates are installed. Although I don't know how that would help the pads drag less. I would think that they would make the pads drag more if anything since it takes up more space between the piston and the rotor.

The correct name is thermal and acoustic isolation/dampening shims.

The shims help reduce brake fluid temperature and isolate the pad vibration from the caliper pistons.

Oem shims are TUNED to match oem pads.

"a sound damping member operatively connected to the brake pad, said sound damping member having a groove cut therethrough to form at least one tuning fork member, and having a damping material engaged with said at least one tuning fork member for damping energy associated with vibrations of the tuning fork member, thereby sound-dampening brake squeal noise, wherein said groove forms a generally sine-wave shape in the sound damping member. "

http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/62...scription.html

Specific slot dimensioned tuned shims should be supplied with each aftermarket pad set otherwise it is probable that the aftermarket pad manufacture/reseller didn't spend the hundreds of thousands necessary to optimize the pad for a specific application.

Every pad and rotor will have a different acoustic signature.

You women. I have the HPS, and I barely notice the squeaking. Anything more than a slight squeak at the end of braking, or first thing in the AM is an issue. Other than that, quality pads usually make noise. Try the HP+ lol
To the OP: did you get new rotors when you got new pads?

I bought the same ones from Stillen. They make noise, lots of it.. kind of embarrasing. They sound like if i didn't have brakes at all. It's only at times when it makes that noise , after driving the car for a while. I have been contacting stillen, but they've been hiding.

if they are dragging you should be able to look at the rotor and see bluing or heat spots
