Default Brand New Koni Sports Leaking Oil

Installed a set of Koni Yellow Sport shocks a few months ago. After the first day of driving I noticed little splatters of dirty oil around the top of the shock tower and the adjustment rod coming out of the top of the shock on the fronts had drops of oil seeping out.
Now after a few months of driving there is about a teaspoon of oil collected in the top of the shock mounts and my shocks are bottoming out on large bumps at low speed.

That's not a good sign. Do they have a warranty?

Yes, Koni has a lifetime warranty, take them back to where you bought them.

I just got a set of TC Kline Koni shocks and one of the front ones is leaking too.
I cleaned out the oil, went for a drive and there's oil again.

I'll have to call TC Kline on Monday to deal with this.

Sorry for the leaking issue, Koni will fully stand behind the product. On the issue of sending them to the seller or to Koni. I would think you'd be better off sending them to Koni directly, unless the place you bought them from is going to swap you out a brand new shock.

One thing I do want to point out, it would take more then a teason of oil to leak out to impact how they perform. Hotchkis springs are not that much stiffer then oem springs, so they aren't going to offer that much more resistance against bottoming out on those large bumps. And adjusting Koni Yellow's stiffer won't change that either since they are rebound adjustable only, compression damping is fixed.

I don't know if you asked about warranty before you bought, but I'm sure Tc Kline warranties them the same way that Koni does, full lifetime. Truechoice told me their warranty is the same as Koni.

I think they do too. I don't know if they'll send me a new shock or if I'll have to wait for my current one to be serviced. I've only tracked them once!

Do you think the shock dyno could've damaged it?

I forgot to mentioned that I have a clunking noise from that side of the car too, and from reading, it sounds like the clunking of a blown shock.

I wouldn't think the dyno could have, isn't Phil very experienced with doing them?

Could be several things that aren't related to the shocks. I will be in the area (San Jose to hopefully finally get my dyno's done) in a couple of weeks on wed or tue, if you can give me a ride and drive I can give you a second opinion on the noise.

I think he is but I was a bit worried about seeing the shocks on the dyno at full bump/rebound and pretty high psiton speeds.
The thing is I only dynoed one front and one rear, and I think one of the rear ones is making some noise too. Could be paranoia
Contact me before you come up to see if schedules match.

Steve Mitchell at M-WORK-Z who does my alignments had the TC Klines on his time attack car. He had them rebuilt twice, once by Truechoice and once by Pro Parts and they still leaked so he switched to Motons.

Sucks to hear that. I'm hoping they get them right since I've only had them a little while and haven't even had a chnace to fully tune them yet.

I also had a problem with my Koni shocks.

I went to adjust the damping at a track day at Thunderhill, and oil started leaking out of the top of the shock (looked to be coming from the area around the adjustment screw).

I had originally had mine installed @ Z Car Garage in San Jose, so I had them get me a new shock. I paid a minimal installation fee, but the shock was free.

I am now a bit leery of the adjustment, and have mine set at very close to the softest setting and just leave it there all the time. The rest of my shocks are doing very well, and the new one had been performing fine since. They have all seen several autoX and track days now, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they one failure was a rare occurrence and won't happen again.

Good luck with yours!

-D!

Can you share the results of the shock dyno?
Not trying to hijack the thread; maybe you could start another thread or PM me.

Mine leak slightly, but only when I adjust them at the top. I called TC Kline and they told me not too worry unless it's leaking constantly and leaving fluid all over the place. They told me they are over filled slightly.

I have tracked mine about 8 times and they perform flawlessly every time.
