Default Stillen Swaybar Owners: Does your swaybar shift to the side too?

Hey guys, well I recently noticed that my sway bar has a considerable amount of play in between the collars and the bushings/brackets..... it will shift roughly 3/4 of an inch left/right.. I tried to clamp the collars with some wormdrive clamps today to see if it will help, but I dont understand why it is doing this.. recently I did upgrade to polyurethane bushings, perhaps they are not as wide as the OEM bushings? I dont understand... The collars on the swaybars are welded so they didnt get moved.

Heres a pic:

odd..... I wonder if there are any thin collars that someone makes that we could put in between the collar on swaybar and the bushing to fill the gaps...

Stillen added those welded collars because their sway bars used to slide much further to the side... the collar stops this. I have the hotchkis bars from before they came with collars welded on and I bought a set of collars that I bolted onto the bars to stop the movement. If you search there is a thread on the mcmaster-carr collar mod for the old style bars. I guess the movement is "normal."

i see.... it causes my endlinks to shift from || to be like \\ and //.. pretty annoying. Yea I wish the bar didnt bend directly after the bushing/bracket, otherwise I think I would put collars on the outsides of the bushing as well. Or a very skinny one to put inbetween the existing collar and the bushing.

Ooo I found the thread... I think I shall order 2 of those clamps since they are pretty thin ( 9/16" wide ), so hopefully they will fit on the outsides of the bushing. Thanks for the tip!

Heres link to the part for the front sway bar

Hmm well I got the clamps... unfortunately they dont work as well as I had hoped because of the curviture of the sway bar. I was hoping to put the clamps on the outsides of the bushings/bracket but the swaybar beings to curve right after so the clamp doesnt fit no there squarely... I had to just put the clamp along the curve of the swaybar so one edge of it is near the bushing, hopefully eliminating travel... Also I put worm drive clamps on the inside collars to prevent movement as well....

My Hotchkis sway bar had the same issue, and I bought some 1.25" PVC 40 conduit, cut two 1/4" pieces, then cut a slit in them so they would snap over the sway bar, and then snapped them in place between the welded collar on the sway bar and the poly sway bar bushing. They've been there for 6 months now and keep the sway bar from moving. PVC 80 would be thicker, and probably would work a little better.

So I did the PVC spacer today, seems like it will work nicely. I bought some 1" pvc pipe couplings, so the ID was about 1.25", only costs $.55 I believe... cheap. Too bad I wasted $20 bucks on those mcmaster clamps my fault tho.

Thanks again.

If you are using the stock rubber bushings maybe consider replacing them with the Prothane urethane bushings. I have them on my Stillen sways. Need to check on movement.

I'd like to state that that is how my problem started in the first place by upgrading the stock bar with urethane bushings......then I upgraded to hotchkis sways to solve the problem ending up right where I was in the first place....I am going to try the PVC fix.

I believe the stock rubber bushings actually grip the bar in a way that it does not slide around....the urethane bushings slop around due to the grease that comes with it.

You did the right thing danimal-manimal! LOL Loved that show! The Prothane bushings are a good mod as the stock ones ARE rubber. If you grease them well, def a worthy replacement for teh OEMs.

As for the sways, a few of the first sets of bars from several companies didn't have collars, a mistake maybe? I have the older, gold colored Stillen bars with welded collars and that's why I bought them.

Well, even the stillen sways with the collars are prone to the slipping. Mine are the red ones with collars. Luckily, the PVC mod worked for me as well. I agree with danimal and think the stock rubber bushings must have gripped the bar, where as the urethane ones do not and slide around.

what actually was the problem ??

Since the swaybar moving 1/2 inch back and forth actually is not a problem, what was the problem and how was it solved?

well the sway bar shifted more then 1/2 an inch, and it is a problem, it can cause the endlinks to bind and eventually break.

The endlinks have plenty of room for movement. The only part that really hurts the endlinks is the stiffer bar. The stiffer the settings , the faster the endlinks wear out.
