Default Coilover height adjustment

To adjust the height adjustment on coilovers, do you have to remove the coilover? I was always under the impression that you didn't have to remove the coilover and that they could be adjusted without removing. Is this a true statement, or do you have to remove the lower mount so that the lower shock body can be turned to adjust height? Again, I was under the impression from reading some of the threads that a coilover did not have to me removed for height so that it was a pretty easy process going from daily driver settings to track settings. BTW , I did do a search on this topic "adjusting coliovers" for a search but nothing came up as far as height adjustments. Any and all info on adjusting the height would be appreciated.

Thanks

Get your car on jackstands, take off the wheels, and take a look.

It's usually easier to lower than raise ride height. Some can be adjusted with just the spanner wrenches, others may have to be removed or at least partially removed. But it really depends on the design which varies per manufacturer.

The lower mounts on the dampers need to be removed from the control arms. In the front you will also need to remove the sway bar end links. Push the lower control arm out of the way then just turn the mounts to raise or lower and reinstall. You won't have to touch the top mounts. But REMEMBER to unlock the locking rings before removing the lower mount of the damper.

I don't have any coilovers yet, but considering them. I heard that there are some coilovers that don't require removing to adjust ride height. Is this a true statement and if so, which manufacturers provide the type that don't require any sort of coilover removal to adjust ride heightl. I'm also assuming that the only required tools to adjust the height are the supplied spanner wrenches.
Thanks for all info and the education.......

it depends on the coilover - some you do have to remove, some you don't

Coilovers that are 1 way height adjustable (via preload adjustment only) do not require you to remove them from the car - Bilstein are one type, as well as KW

Coilovers that are 2 way height adjustable require you to remove the lower mounting bolts from the control arms to do the main height adjustments (generally greater than 1/2 inch). Smaller height adjustments can be done via spring preload
