Rack and Pinion
Does anyone have a good diagram of a rack and pinion? I need to know exactly how it works and how it is put together. I am trying to restore a vehicle that someone else has worked on and the rack is messed up. The wheels turn 2 and ½ revolutions to the right and only 1 ½ to the left. I know someone has taken the thing apart and put it back together but they did not do the job right. I took the car to an alignment shop but the dude (who is one of the best in LA) told me the rack and pinion needs to be adjusted before he can do the alignment. I have taken the rack and pinion out but I’m not sure where to make the adjustment from.
Any help or suggestions on the matter will be greatly appreciated.

sounds like this could fix your issue:
1) disconnect the steering u-joint from the rack.
2) straighten out your wheels manually (best eyeball guess)
3) reconnect the steering u-joint with the steering wheel straightened out as well.
(i guess you could do it with removing the steering wheel instead of the u-joint too)
