Sorry if this has been asked before but I have been reading mixed reviews on this. I'm looking into Big Brake kits ( Stoptech and Project MU ) for my 2004 Z, my question: Isn't is necessary to get both front and rear kits? I have been reading that some people have been just upgrading the fronts and keeping rears stock...
With StopTech kits, the front only kit will have the correct balance as the kits are designed with stock rear brakes in mind. A rear kit added at a later date will not shift the bias as they are designed to match factory rear torque outputs. Most other companies do not have this flexibility as they have a limited range of caliper sizes to choose from.
In the widely publicized RSX Challenge back in 2005, a Project Mu kit performed 40 feet worse than a bone stock car (171 ft) on 245 Hoosiers with a front only kit, but they may have done a better job of optimizing kits since then. For comparison, a StopTech equipped car with 225 Hoosiers stopped 60 feet shorter in the same test (110 ft), also with a front only kit.
