Buy new or rebuilt rack and pinion?
Hey all,
I need a replacement rack and pinion....85k, leaking badly, power steering fluid very low...just going to replace it now with some other stuff since rack and pinion swaps need an alignment once it's done. I'm just going to do it now I think while I'm having my shocks done.
Now...a rack and pinion from Nissan is about a grand?
Rebuilt ones range from $200 to $350 it seems....with anywhere from a one year warranty for the $350 one from Z1 Performance, to a lifetime warranty for the $200 ones all over the web.
If I do go with a rebuilt one....any recommendations on which to buy or which to avoid?
Any expert opinions out here? Really don't want to spend a thousand bucks on a rack and pinion....I've already ordered the $30 urethane bushings for whatever I buy, but if a rebuilt r&p is totally reliable and a good way to go then I'll just have the urethane bushings put in and then have my mechanic install the replacement unit.....or as I've already said and feel compelled to repeat the question in my thread headline for some reason...is a rebuilt rack and pinion a bad idea?
Would I feel any difference between new and a rebuilt? Is the issue of what's different simply a question of reliability or do rebuilt ones feel sloppier or noisier?
Thanks sincerely for all help...this is new territory for me so I want to make sure I make the best decision without wasting money.
Oh...I'm strictly a daily driver guy that enjoys the handling of a Z on curvy roads.

I have a 2005 OEM R&P that I was going to install on my 2006, but they're apparently slightly different. It's practically new, and only had 5000 miles on it from the car it came off of.
Let me know if you're interested. I could have it shipped to you for less than what you're looking at above.
