I sell cars. We will sell, occassionally, for a loss on the front end, especially if you're financing. Why? Because dealers can still make a decent profit on the back end. Often, if a dealer shows you an invoice, it's the real thing. The profit is already built into the invoice, direct from the factory, and if you get a car for invoice, the profit for the dealer and the salesman is usually not much. At least, not much on the front. The back depends on your credit and whether you buy extended warranties etc.
Believe it or not, most salespersons are humans, and they have to eat too. There is not nearly as much money in selling new cars as some might lead you to think.
The reality of the situation is that unless you are paying over factory sticker price, you aren't really getting screwed badly at all. The place customers really get screwed, and are usually too stupid/uneducated to realize it, is on the back end, not the front, which is where salesmen make the majority of their income.

I guess I'm just glad I didn't pay over MSRP, this was in the the los angeles market, which was pretty hot for the Z.
Anyone who has a 03-04 Z get their car under MSRP out there?

Just picked up mine last monday. 35th. Anniversary edition (black).
Sticker $39,780
paid $35,265.
Thats about $4,500 below sticker, and about $800 below dealer invoice. There is also a 1,000 dealer incentive right now that they have the option to give you. I would ask for it. Never hurts.
Also got 4.79% for 5 years. don't let them screw you on interest. Thats another area where dealers make money.
I did alot of research and went in armed for a fight and they didn't give me one. It helps to do research.
Good Luck all and enjoy.

I went to a dealership today to look at the Z, and the salesman that I got was moaning and *****ing the whole time how the industry changed so much when people go on the internet and find out the invoice price, he said that his commissions used to be about a thousand bucks a car and now it's about $200.
Can that possibly be true? This was at Endicott Nissan in Pompano, FL.

it is true that they don't make as much money as they used to, but i wouldn't blame it all on people knowing the invoice, its competetion, there are many dealers out there that are just glad to sell you a car and there are many that sell cars on the internet
