Default New Member: RX-8 Totalled, get Z?

Well, the make things short, my RX8 that I spent $5k into it is now totalled :-( Depending on what kind of insurance money I get back, will determine what I am going to get.

Basically, I am looking at something with more power than my 8, as fun to drive as my 8, handles well, and gets better MPG than my 8 (would get 16-17mpg shifting at 3.5k every time)

I've been looking at the Z, but here were my other pros/cons for car. Let me know what you guys think of these cars in comparisson to the 8.

So it's either, get a recent car and be done with it and pay off everything, or buy a older/cheaper car, use whatever I have left to fix it up. Anyways here is my list and plans.

NOTE: I have not test drove any of these cars yet, just going by facts on paper and what people have said. All of these are going to compare to my 8.

2003-2004 350Z - Obviously, the most expensive out of all the cars I'm going to choose. Very nice car, has the power, has the style, has better gas mileage than my 8. Really like the looks of this car. Have heard it can be bulky, and the clutch is not as smooth as the 8. Heard bad things about the interior too and does not look as luxerious as the 8. (Please give me your views)

1999 M3 - Another suggestion by someone. I like the simple body style of these, has the power and of course is going to have some kind of luxery. Again as an older car, it's going to be a hunt to find one in good condition and not beaten up. The price range for these I've seen is in the low 20,000's

1993-1995 RX7 - An older car, that I've done a lot of research on. For a daily driver, I have heard that these can be a pain in the butt to keep running without a problem. These run for around $13-$14000 for a decent one and I can put whatever else I have left into the engine or whatever to make it a dependable daily driver. I love the looks of the 7 (FD's) and is the closest to my 8. Maybe I'll be able to find a LS1 swap hah. MPG on these are little less if not the same as our 8. The power is definatly there with the twin turbos, it's just the matter of having a dependable one.

300ZX - Older car and it's going to be hard to find one that isn't worn down too much. I like the looks of the car, already comes with twin turbos, gas mileage is better than the 8 from what I've heard. Looks of the car is nice, but with the money I have left over, I can redo exterior/interior if needed. I have yet to do much research on these cars yet.

3000gt - Older car and I have yet to do research on it. Engine/turbos are going to be worn down, don't know too much about everything on this.

So that's my list so far, as you can see, it has definatly changed from my first list. The limiting factor is going to be insurance on each car. If the car can pull 19-20MPG without having to shift like a grandma then that's a positive. My 8 I pulled 16-17mpg shifting at 3.5k the whole time.

The factors in the car are

Style/Luxury
Power
Insurance
MPG

Future Mods:
Basically what I did with my 8. Springs or coilovers, tinting, exhaust, midpipe, alarm, 7" screen with dvd/navigation and all that (if the car doesn't come with one already) and then later down the line when I have enough money, FI unless the car comes stock with turbos.

Because the 350z and M3 are newer cars. There is nothing wrong with the others but do you want to drive a 10-13 year old car? You may end up spending the extra money on repairs. I'm biased to the 350z (obviously) but I also love the E36.

Dude, 2 cars on the road today besides the true exotics will have head turning looks AND performance, that's the 350Z and the Vette. Go with the Z, you won't regret it.

It handles great, sounds great and has more power than you'll need, and that's in it's stock condition. The interior is not that appealing but oh well. Check out the rest of this forum for some mods you can bolt on if you want to go that route.

car enthusiast like the interior of the z. people who like cars because they are pretty dislike the z's interior. personally, i would never pay for an older bmw; especially if the warranty is gone. you are better off buying a new one. the performance on a 99 m3 isn't that great anyways.

i don't know, but if i were to shift at 3.5 all the time, i think that my gas mileage would be poor also

I usually shift around 3k and manage to get 20-21MPG. Interstate I usually get about 30MPG. Drove to Destin (about 320 miles) and burned a little shy of 2/3s of a tank, filled up with 11.x gallons and did the same on the way back

I'd prefer the Z of course. It's fun to drive stock, fast enough (even though I plan on modding), and definitely has the looks. It's pretty cool sometimes to see people admire the Z. Even little kids that say things like "Look mom!" hehe.

Definitely look into sticking with a newer vehicle and preferably with a warranty because thats definite plus.

3.5k in a 9.5k redline car? I think you forgot that the 8 is a high revving engine.

I totaled my 3000GT about a month ago. I had it 3 years. Let me give you some advice. First, about my car: I loved it. It was a 97, with the larger spoiler. It had the MOST tastful 18" wheels that could go on any 3000GT. It had a beautifual sounding exaust. It was VERY VERY rare and turned a lot of heads.

Unfortunately, I believe it was the most unreliable car put on god's green earth. It was in the shop all the time. It was rediculous.

I now drive a 350Z. There is no comparison. 350Z is much faster and handling is a million times better. Just depends how much money you want to spend.

I have a short anecdote about a former co-worker.

I casually asked him if he was a "car guy" and he started getting into how he loved his old Mazda RX7, and it was such a great sports car and blah blah blah, and then he recently got an RX8. He kept going on about how awesome it was etc, how fast, rotary engine this & that... He basically had the most pleased look on his face etc...

then I told him,

"I got a new 05 350z."

Wiped the smirk right off his face.

Long story short, get the Z, the torque makes it more fun to drive than 90+% of cars under 35k
