Default Transferring Title from Dual to Single Owner

I orginally purchased my Z with my dad co-signing so I could get on his insurance. He hasn't put a dime in it. Its been 3 years now and I have since put it under my own insurance policy.

I have recently taken "official" residence in PA (was going to school here, but everything said I was a resident at my parent's address in NJ) and in order to register the car under my own name in a new state, I need to be the only one on the title.

The only info I can find on NJ and PA DMV sites is transfer of ownership per a sale.

Is there any other way or is that my only option? I really don't want to sit at the DMV and pay a fee only to than change over to PA and pay some more fees.

Call and ask Pa. DMV what needs to be done.

I doubt there is a fee if your simply removing someone, particularly a family member, from title.

You need a new title. Transfer requires two signatures on the old title. BTW you cannot transfer ownership if there is a lien on the original title.

I called NJ DMV this morning. They said if there is a lien (there is) I hadveto call NMAC first and tell them I was changing title holders and they would provide me a letter that I would have to take to the DMV.

Either way, its a pain in the a$$. I have to take a 1/2 day from work just to sit at the DMV.

If car was bought based on your dad's credit, I doubt NMAC will agree to take him off title.

but if you needed your dad to cosign to get them to approve you for the loan it technically is on his credit.

I paid off my car in full (owed around $5k) because I was close enough it just made sense. I'm waiting for the new title from NMAC and then I need to go to the DMV with my father.
