Question GT35R STI to Z

First off I want to say hello to everyone since I am a new member! I am coming from a Heavily modified STi to wanting to purchase a 350z. I love the looks, affordability, and applications that can be made to the 350z's. If I end up getting a Z I want to turbo the car, or possibly buy a used one that is already turboed since I dont want to go through down time with the car again and more importantly the money aspect. My STi is my Daily driver and it made 454awhp and 444awtq on the stock block so the tune is very conservative at 22psi high boost and 20psi low boost on 93+meth (60/40meth/water). I do not know much about turboing 350z's, but i want it to be reliable since it will be my daily driver. Any input would be appreciated or if someone is willing to trade just let me know! Thanks guys

Hey,

A 350z with a turbokit alone with not be very reliable at all. Some have been lucky and their engines have lasted thousands of miles being boosted. Others blew their engines within a couple hundred miles of having FI. If you want reliablily you need to build the block. There's just no other way. A good start would be forged pistons and rods. . And ofcourse a good tune.

Some make it 100 miles and pop the motor and some make it 30,000. No one really knows exactly what mods help the engine last longer boosted and a tune ONLY by someone very familiar with Zs....But if your buying it boosted then your set I guess...just buy a car with an already built block I've seen a 700whp built Z go for like 35k. GL! You'll love the Z

Look into buying a car that already has a Turbo kit and built motor. You can find them fo anywhere from 25,000 to 40,000.

Otherwise, add from 10 to 15000 onto the price of the car just to do the turbo right. (thats just parts.) Then if you want to venture into the 400+ whp range, you should build the block. Thats another 2500-10,000 depending on your goals.

But be warned... buying a car that is already built means you could be inheriting someone else's problems.

At 6 psi, you should be okay with the stock block. But dont expect miracles. 6 psi relates to about 350 whp.

No most people who blow there motor are not running 6 psi, probably more like 9 or 10. They usualy drive the **** out of it. I have yet to hear of a Z driving 100 miles turboed and blowing (if tuned correctly). Considering you had meth on your STI you might as well do it on the Z aswell tfor added safty I havent seen many people with meth injection so I say meth injection and 10 psi you should be looking at the same power levels as your STI if not more and it should be preety reliable. I have had my tubo kit on for over 12000 miles now and im doing fine.

I personally think you should stick with your car or you will end up disappointed. Especially in the affordability factor, I would have to say our mods can be very pricey.

If you are going to trade your car in for a coupe, get one that you know will be worth it, like an M3 or a Corvette.

did you install the turbo kit yourself? also is your kit the TT one (sorry for the newb question) and when do you start spraying meth, as soon as boost hits or after 5psi?

350whp would be fine just as long as it will be reliable...

The Z can be reliable while being turbo'd if is tuned correctly (as with any other car). The Z runs a fairly aggressive amount of timming stock and alot of the newbs on this forum slap the kit on with the out of box tune and start driving around expecting the AFR to be perfect. Just take it to one of the reputable tunning shops on the forum for the tune and it will be fine.

I will say though that the Z will require more time effort and money initially than the STI since it is not turbo'd from the factory. Just keep that in mind

I sold my Z and got an STi and haven't looked back. The only regrets are in the looks department. Other than that, I'm guessing you'll come to hate the Z like I did and you'll end up driving the STi more.

Whatever floats your boat though. Good luck.

Its all in what you want really. I liked the comforts of the STI, but not so much the looks. 440+whp though is hard to mess with. Stock block makes it even that much cooler. Not that your motor is going to last forever like that, but at the same time, its probably much much more reliable then a Z with 440whp+ on a stock block. The Z is a nice touring car, with good looks. If you want to go fast, you already have it.

With my funds, I have to accept that my car will be a mid 13 sec car for a while. And this is after I already owned a mid 12 sec EVO. Im fine with that though, and will most likely be sticking with my car for a while.
