Default question about buying a salvage title z

hey i have a quick question about the Z

I saw an ads about a salvaged title Z, burgundy color 2006 touring coupe, about 20k miles and the seller is going for $11.5k. Mannual trans. i currently own a roadster but also want a coupe as well and i dont know if it worth the price.

i saw the car and it was hit:

front head on,
front side
back bumper too

all lights were broken

but it got fixed and repainted... looks pretty new to me.. u wont notice it was hit before.

thus i was just wondering if it worth to buy salvage title and if this Z worth that much...

let me get the pic, darn it.. his ads expired...

but it looks like new...but i think the paint he used is cheap... i know for sure that he got it done by those painter next to mexico border... because the car park there...

i am living in california, san diego btw...

oh yeah..

he also painted the door handles which i hate because it all looks burgundy now...i kinda like the original handle color...

The general feeling here is that salvage title cars are rarely "worth it". "Looks" are meaningless, once somebody sees that it's salvaged, it's considered to be worth half what it would get if it wasn't. You lose all warranty. You never know what hidden damage there may be.

Get it inspected by a mechanic. Salvage titles usually lower the value anywhere from 20% to 40% depending on the severity of the accident.

your not saving anything the cars are worthless. Dealers wont take them in on trade and most wont buy it when your looking to get rid of it so really what are you saving.

Just say no to salvaged vehicles. The little bit you save now is not worth it at all.

well a mechanic checked it out and said that the z is actually in great condition.. nothing major.. engine, suspensions, axles, were not touched...

the only thing that he saw was muffler hanger is broken and not yet fix... but he said it can be fixed for under 20$.. but now u guys said that salvaged is not worth anything.. so i am not sure if i should buy.. but if i want to get it.. how much should i give the guy for it? asking for 11k ... maybe give him 8-9k??

what u guys think.. cuz if i get a new or used clean tittle 06 it gonna cost me around 16-18k... i was thinking it could save lots of money... since the car is in great condition...

If you are getting a loan on it, call your bank and see if they will even give a loan on it. Then call your insurance company and ask them what type of coverage they will give you on a vehicle with a salvage title. Let us know what they said.

well thinking of pay by cash... my insurance will cover it just like a regular car.. but if it is a total lost they will pay the current market price minus the salvaged titled. i am thinking of current price - 3--5k.. so yeah.. i dont know.. cuz it seems to be a good car since it doesnt have any problem... execepted it is a 2006... potential oil burner...i asked the owener he said "i dont know". i think he is stating the true since many people dont know if their z is an oil burner either...

You seemed to miss what DaveZ replied. A salvage title car is worth only about 1/2 that of an equivalent clean title car. ASSUMING ALL REPAIRS ARE GOOD AND COMPLETE. So, figure out how much you would be willing to pay for the car if it had a clean title. Divide that number in half, and then make an offer. Likely as not, the offer will be rejected. If they do take it, then you have gotten a decent car for a fair price.

The biggest downside is that you don't ever really know if all the repairs were done well. I'd also figure out how to make sure the airbags are still good, such as seeing receipts for replacement airbags.

An upside is that since the car is worth half as much, your depreciation is going to be only 1/2 as much (or less) than a clean title car.

Congratz on the car.

As a father, I sometimes have to remind my own collage age kids when they talk about "their money". I'm helping pay for their tuition, room and board. I give them a place to live and eat during vacations and summers. I pay for their medical insurance, car insurance, and cell phone. They are driving cars that I own because they were purchased with my money. Sure they work, but at what point are they spending their money vs. spending my money?
