Why is everyone asking way more than Edmunds values?
I could afford a 350z up to 13,000 dollars. This gives me many years and mileages, and trim lines I could choose according to Edmunds.
Everyone in the midwest and Indiana area are asking way more on sites like Autotrader and craigs. Usually like 2-3k more...
Can i expect to ever get a 350z for the Edmunds price or are they legit worth more?

Simple, it's all part of "used car buying/selling 101". Sellers ask for more than it's worth and what they expect to get because they know that buyers are going to offer less than it's worth and what they expect to pay. In the end, you both wind up in the middle which is what Edmunds publishes.

Yeah but I expect to pay like 10,500 for a car they have asking 14,000. What do i say, 9000 at first? No way will they take this offer seriously.

I allow a 10 percent fudge factor for book prices and asking prices. In other words if the Z is listed for $15,000, offer $13,500. New members will sit here for months complaining about prices. Reason is they are not making serious offers. The car is not coming to you. Its up to you to make it happen.
I was thinking about $13,000 is not an offer.
My budget is $13,000 is not an offer.
I will think about it and get back with you is not an offer.
Can you come down on the price? is not an offer.
I will give you $13,000 for this car today IS an offer. Money talks. Bull poop walks.

It's also nice working at a dealership getting cars for $300 over what they have in it. Got mine really cheap that way.
But as davidv stated, be reasonable with an offer, sooner or later the right one will show up. I've seen quite a few around pa and md for 11-15k. At least your not shopping for an S chassis. Look at the drift tax associated with them now compared to Edmonds and kbb.

^^^ thats how i got my car. offered what I had. It was lowball but it was my max and they said no. A month later I see the car still for sale, offer same price again they cave bc they were about to close on a new house. Just ask youself what your willing to pay for the car. offer a bit less if you want, but stay firm on you whats it worth to me price and walk away if they wont come down.

so...i'm from Toronto Canada and have been looking along the border here (close to NY state, Michigan and even Ohio) for 350zs...someone is asking 9800 for a 2003(not sure of the trim level, didn't say in the email) with 120k miles...what is a reasonable amount for me to offer assuming everything is running ok and in decent condition?

I'm a sales manager at a dealership and I was having this conversation with our used car buyer just last week. Our used car inventory was getting low and I asked him why he wasn't buying us more cars. Basically he (and others agree) that there is going to be a used car bubble just like what happened in the housing market. He isn't buying used cars because everyone else is paying $2000 or more over Black Book and he doesnt want to be stuck with over priced inventory. Basically in a month many dealers expect the used car bubble to bust and many dealers will be left with stock they cant sell without a loss. Try waiting 3 to 4 weeks and see if the prices come down.

hmm...I guess I could wait it out...but I don't see how a 350z could go much lower than 9800...but then again...120k miles is quite a bit...

He is talking about how people are over pricing their cars.
Can you explain this bubble more? Who else agrees?

the bubble was inadvertently created by the cash for clunkers program and rising gas prices/the economy. average used car values have been steadily going up for some time now. more people are buying used cars and used gas efficient cars and it's driving overall used value up at the auctions. a lot of dealers have been keeping a close eye on this and a LOT of them have slowed down their used car purchasing in anticipating that prices will drop back down.
I haven't heard any dates of when the suspected bubble will pop - I don't think it's really a bubble that will pop, I just think they will gradual decline.. but what do I know?

I did check edmunds and kbb, value states around $8100 and $7900 respectively. This is a base model with a previous accident(not branded, and current owner did not know of accident, according to carfax it was reported in 2006 in California, lines up with the current owner's history on the car). I have made an offer for $8000, so we'll see if it is acceptable or not. It's been posted for a few weeks now, so maybe they are willing to go down on price if not many ppl have inquired about it.

Still if you drive the car offer $8,010.

Sorry allow me to clear it up a bit. The drive is about 1.5-2hrs, so it isn't a big deal if I was to turn around n go home. The only reason I'm trying to make a tentative deal over the phone is because I need to send the vin number and description to the us customs and border protection 72 hrs before showing up at the border.
I also made it very clear that if anything is not as he says(I was very specific with questions and details to where I was even told of all dings that he is aware of) then I would simply drive home.
I plan to thoroughly look throughout the car when I am there and will also bring a jack in case I need to use it to look underneath.
I'm still in talks and haven't made a decision as I'm doing some research on the vin as well as service done at the dealership. In the end it will come down to me seeing it in person, I just wasn't sure the price was ok for the mileage as I havent seen one with such high mileage listed for sale. But thanks for your replies. I can't wait to get back into a 350z again!
