Default Dumb muffler question

Hello members,
Has anyone cleaned the inside of their mufflers of their Z?
I notice the inside of mufflers are getting real dirty with coal like substance building up.
My dumb question is: can you reach in to clean it, I mean, I always thought you have to protect the mufflers from water going in so....?? I'm thinking about using my tire cleaner thingy to reach in and scrub it then host it out with jet streams of water.

Thanks.

I.F.

Why would you want to do that?

If you are talking about cleaning the tips (first 5" or so) have at it as long as the system is cool to the touch. Lots of people try and keep the inside of them clean. You can use a rag and metal polish and it should clean up nice.

what would you use to clean the tips on the outside? I clean mine and there is just a tiny hint of what looks to be black stuff that wont come off the tips.
I want it removed !!

Go to your local hardware store and buy some steel wool.. the finest grade. I think it's 000 or 0000 (the one with the most 0's in it). Just tear a bit off and rub away (no need to rub aggressively). You may do this while the exhaust tips are dry. This should get that black stuff off that you talked about. Next, to make the tips really shine, people usually either use Eagle One's Nevr Dull or Mother's Billet Polish. You should be able to find either at your local auto parts store. Mother's Billet is twice as expensive, but well worth it IMO. It's also a "true" polish (so I've heard) compared to the Nevr Dull.
