Default black gunk?

has anyone ever had a buildup of some sort of black gunk on their wheels? Since im at work right now I can't get a pic to show you all what I'm talking about. Its not brak dust or anything like that. to me it looks like grease of som sort. I've tried everything I could think of to get it off but nothing is working. If I scrape at it long enough with a brillo pad it begins to go away but not really because it just smears down to another section of the wheel. Does anyone know what I'm trying to describe and is there a SIMPLE way of getting this gunk off? Oh yea it's only on my front passenger side wheel too.

Have you tried a good wheel brush. I recommend soap and water to clean, due to the fact that most wheel cleaners are acidic. I have heard of a type of wheel cleaning gel that is safe.

Once you get it off wax your wheels to help with future cleaning.

Not seeing any picys, I reckon John's probably on the money here. If it is tar, soap and water will not generally move it.
