The weather was decent here in the Mid-A, so I took the opportunity to give my baby a bath. While drying her off I started to realize many things I was doing could be compared to "good" sex. Yep, sex is always on my mind, so sue me!
Anywho, here's the list. Additions and comments welcome.
1) Take your time
Take it easy, it's a sports car but this part is not a race. If you're too fast about it, you may scratch stuff across the body, and you're gonna regret it. If you're tryin to get this done before a big game comes on then see point #11. If you finish up too quickly and miss a lot of spots your car will not be happy, and your friends will notice.
2) Be gentle
Take slow, even strokes to soak up the most water, maybe even pat over the body in places. You don't want to just spread it around, then you'll have to go over it again and again which will keep you from getting to the other parts.
3) Be "in the moment"
Take on a Zen-like attitude, when you're there, you're THERE (body AND mind). Notice what you're doing and be observant. If you're mind is elsewhere you may miss some important spots and you'll notice it later, when it's too late.
4) Look deep into her eyes
Those small spots around the headlights are tough to get water drops out of. Get em out the first time around or you'll see spots later and when you're trying to polish her up or wax her she'll drip just at the wrong moment and cause streaking.
5) Use your fingers
Don't just generally and clumsily wipe all over the place. Use your fingers to get into those tight spots. You'll learn which ones work better where.
6) Clean up your stuff
Once you're done, don't just leave your stuff all over the place dirty and getting moldy and mildewy and generally stanky. Clean your stuff up soon after you've used it so that you can use it again when the need arises.
7) Sometimes bigger IS better
Sorry guys, but it's true in many cases, and this is one of 'em. Instead of using a smallish washcloth or handtowel size (microfiber or cotton), use a big one. This way it takes fewer strokes to get the result you're looking for. Also, it holds more wetness so you don't have to stop mid-dry to wring the thing out, you can just keep going...and going...and going.
8) You might have to bring along extras
Referencing point #7, if you only have smallish towels then you're gonna have to bring along some backup to help finish the job. With the smaller towels you might try to finish the entire job with just one and it will not turn out well. So, either use a big towel or bring along lots of smaller ones and swap out often.
9) Don't do it dry
At rare moments you might have to re-moisten the area. If it's a very hot day and some areas dry too quickly (leaving spots) before you get to them, you may have to re wet the area. You don't have to hose down the whole car again, just get that spot wet again and then towel it down. You might have to use a water vinegar mix.
10) The more you do it, the better you get
With most everything, you get better at it over time. You learn more, how to be more efficient (so you CAN do it faster but get the same outcome as doing it slower-when that playoff game is coming on), the spots that need extra attention, new "tricks".
11) Don't start what you can't finish or if you ain't feelin' it, don't do it
Don't even start it if you know you're not in the mood to do a great job. Sometimes it's better to not even start something than do it half-assed. You won't be happy and your car won't be happy, and your friends will notice that missing glow from your baby.
