Default Z still has shipping plastic on it - Do I clay the residue?

I had my Z shipped cross country. It never got detailed by the dealer, so it still has its shipping plastic wrap on it which I haven't yet removed. I was told that the plastic would leave a residue that would have to be removed with "kerosene and cleaner wax". I wonder if any of you guys have experience with this and if I could use clay to remove the residue. I am dying to drive the car, but it has to be detailed to perfection before my peeps see it.

I have the zaino starter kit with the clay and Z2 and Z5 and wash.

Any tips and technique you guys would be willing to share?

Yeah, I have everything I need as far as real cotton towels, leaf blower, random orbital buffer etc. It's going to be a party with only me and the Z invited. ( no funny stuff ).

Hmm... I told them not to take the plastic wrap off mine either. I dont want them touching the damn car. I didn't know it left a residue? Well when I get it I am sure to find out hehe.

Default My buddy that works at mercedes - does this all day long

He gets the cars off the carriers and pulls the plastic and he has to do the "kerosene and cleaner wax" treatment to them. Apparently ALL cars require this step. If you bought a car off the showroom floor, YOUR car has been buffed already.

I decided to leave the quality of the first wax/clean up to ME.

Talking Clay Bar First

I had my G35 Coupe shipped as well and the plastic stayed on, at least some of it made the trip,

I removed the rest and then I washed with Dawn and then used the Clay bar, as per Zaino instructions, and I had to re-do the residue areas a bit more than the rest of the no-stick areas after the Z-7 wash but it did remove the residue...

So Clay your butt off on these areas...

The plastic sheeting came off fine, but where the edge of the plastic caught dirt there were lines of grime which I had to remove with alcohol and a microfibre towel. First I washed with zaino car wash and a boars hair brush which cleaned most of the grit out of the residue leaving just adhesive which came off easily, no claying, cleaner waxing or anything like that.

I tried lighter fluid which worked even better than alcohol. Goo gone or goof off worked pretty well too. None of these things damage paint in my experience.

I was very happily surprised. Hope it goes as well for you guys in the same boat. Take your time and enjoy working on your new toy.

Cheers!
