Default Disapointed

Took the Z to a local 1/8 mile drag strip last night and I'm not happy with my best time. Ran 9.40 at 77.5 mph. Car feels faster than that. I was looking for some 9.0s. There was a stock '05 Mustang GT, auto running 9.2 - 9.3. Guess it's time to add a bottle and spray it.

i was about to say WTF! but then I saw your sig, 5AT. As much as I hate to say it, but thats what you get for getting the auto. Just to give you an idea, I had a 92 mustang GT auto that ran 15.7 at the track stock, friend with same exact model and year with a standard ran 14.8. I installed 3.73 gears from the standard 3.23 gears and I ran a 14.7.

Taking a car with auto tranny to the drag strip is like putting a square peg into a round hole...just doesn't fit, dude.

?

I beg to differ. I've ran this with my AT and light mods. I don't have wasted time in between shifts.
1/8 .... 8.84 mph .. 80.40
And this was before the plenum install.

You can not compare the 92 Ford AOD auto to the 5AT in the Z. I had a "90 Mustang GT 5 speed and my wife had a '92 GT with the AOD and it was a dog. The modern autos are much better. Have you been to the strip lately? The fastest cars there run autos. I came from the GM "F" body world (2000 Ws6 w/6spd.) and I can tell you the Ls1 autos were just as fast as the 6spds. Plus they never missed a shift.

If you can get a 2.0 second 60-foot time, then you're 1/8 mile ET will be about 9.2 seconds.

Are you using the power braking technique suggested by other automatic drivers?

Are you using the manual mode to shift?

There's nothing wrong with you or the car. Better results come with practice. Have fun.

2.2 60-foot time not due to wheel spin. Track was hooking good.

Tryed launching several ways. Off idle, power brake @ 1500, & @ 2000. Best time was leaving at 2000 rpm.

Did both full auto and manual mode. Best results was a combo of both. Launched in auto mode and after 1 - 2 shift went to manual.

I didn't think anything is wrong with the car. It's just not as quick as I had hoped.

LOL... some of the most serious drag racers use automatics, just go look at the ls1 scene, you give up a small amount of HP for never missing a shift. You can easly add more horse power by just getting the next bolt on, but there is no way to make sure you will never miss a shift on a standard w/o getting an automatic.

I am not trying to diss the standard or anything... but you obviously don't know what you are talking about when it comes to what happens at a drag strip.

Well drag racers love automatics if they are racing bracket since it is not about lowest time but about hitting your dial in time and an automatic gives the better opportunity for consistant times becuase of fewer possibilities of changes lie in shifting times.

I have a 5AT run and sub 13's just about always, very few mods and a heavy touring model, street tires and with spare, tools, etc etc in it when I drag race. last Weds at Infineon Raceway I blew away 2 -350z 6MT with a passenger in my car.(head to head, not bracket) I dynoed at 226 rwhp and 248 rwt.(Dynajet) Nothing special except the torque. Not bad for intake and exhaust. Not much rwhp.

If I didn't have a bad left knee I would have a 6MT, but the auto's can hold their own. The auto shifts pretty quickly in manual mode. I am currently in #1 position in the Infineon Z Car drag series, so a 5AT must be competitive. There are lots of Z's of all years out there and about 10 350Z competitors.

BTW my 13.8 was with the brake fuse in.
