hey guys,

ive got 20" iforged rims, weighing 25 lbs each up front, and 27 lbs each in the rear, wrapped in nitto 555 tires. just wondering if these are helping me (wider tires with more grip) or hurting (heavy rims) in takeoff? any input is greatly appreciated

 

I have a feeling they'd be hurting you. Even with more width, ur power would nvr get to the ground as efficiently as they would if your wheels are lighter. Personally i wouldn't get 20's for that reason exactly.

hey they came on the car i got it used and it had em on it, and i gotta say, the style isnt for everyone, but its grown on me. im just starting to mod the car (just got 5/8 spacer, dc ss headers, hiflow cats, and popcharger) and was just curious. ive seen some others with close to these mods and was looking at their times, and was just wondering what i might expect.

 

yes they are hurting your performance, and style in my mind. the 20 inch tires are probably taller than the stock ones so your gears will actually be longer, NA that will hurt you performance wise. the stock 18s are actually really heavy, mine weighed 58 pounds with tires. thats crazy...

 

thanks. ive got the 5at and am switching to the 3.5 gears. would that help with the gears being too tall?

 

That would help, but you have a lot of wheel and tire to get moving. (rotational mass).

 

For traction, the smaller the sidewall on the tire, the worse traction you will get.

 

Time slips would be helpful.

 

Well, it really depends on what you're going to do with your car. If you're just driving around the city, then 20's are fine. I've got 20" iforged wheels myself & I feel better response now then when I had my OEM 18's. Now if you're trying to get timeslips, then yes, I would definitely go smaller & lighter but not everyone out there is constantly trying to get timeslips especially on city streets or they'd be getting a whole different slip . As far as people hating 20's, it's all about execution. You definitely have to get the right style to match the car which I agree means no spinners! Then again, what it boils down to is personal preference. If you like them, who cares what other people say. To each his own as they say.

 

thanks for all the input guys. i have never been worried about what others have thought about my car or rims in the least. i was just getting the mod bug, and have just been analyzing different aspects about the car. just wondering if these are slowing me down to the point that after a few bolt-ons ill only be back up to a stock level, or what.

 

The only way does wheels help you out is if you have more then 350+rwhp becouse at that point you have start to have traction issues with hard launches. And once you go pass 500rwhp you'll need DT's to get more surface are of the tire on the ground. So its up to you. And one thing sometimes when the wheels weight a little more then usual (3, 4 ,5 pounds more) dont really hurt but what matters is getting that tire to do a 360 rotation thats the hard part and yes like silver TA said less sidewall = less traction. Thats why people sometimes before they race lower their tire pressure so their sidewall rinkles at the launch and then since your going so fast the tire growns back to normal.

They are def hurting you. Even if they weighed the same as stock it would hurt you because the wheel is larger, more weight is further from the hub which is harder to spin than if it was in the center.
