Default Launch

Integrate, I also remember reading something about the power being cut when they tried to powerbrake too. Another poster said that he could not go above 2000 rpm when powerbraking. I had no problem going slightly over 3000 rpm while powerbraking on the single occasion I tried this and it resulted in no power loss either, but I do not do that as it imposes a tremendous strain on the drivetrain. I would NEVER recommend anyone do a hi-rev neutral drop on the Z.
I found that my best method for this track surface and temp was to lower hot tire temps to 28#. Turn off TCS and preload to 1500 rpm in full auto. As you can see, it launches very well when compared to the 6MT. It broke my heart to watch the 6MT Z launch that was running Saturday as the wheel hop was pretty awful. Regards, Jim

Very good times. Especially the 60 ft.

Did you power brake? or neutral drop? I remember another 5AT owner saying that the Z didn't allow him to power brake.

Very interesting. I wonder what caused the other Z owner's car to cut the power. As for the neutral drop, that was the only way the other Z owner was able to launch his car. I was just making sure you didn't do that also .

I still wonder why the 6MT was getting wheel hop. Doesn't seem like any other 6MT owners are getting that . Maybe the guy just didn't know how to launch?

Default Wheel hop

If you do a search, earlier on several guys reported severe wheel hop problems. Not really anything new here.
I don't understand why other 5AT owners would have to resort to a neutral drop launch. I had to take action(s) to keep my tires from totally breaking loose on launch and doing a neutral drop would have worsened traction loss. Regards, Jim

Hi-rev neutral drop? I only did that once, on my Mother's 53 Chevrolet right after I got a driver's license. Instant ruined transmission; I would never do that on any car, much less the Z! I can't imagine any auto trans being treated tht way. I still remember the sick feeling I got when I knew the trans was damaged. Never again.

I get wheel hop like a mad man. I assume its normal/common, but it needs to be fixed and does make you air on the side of caution when launching, I guess that guy didnt know that.

Id imagine the automatic would get the same, since it is afterall, the same car, with the same engine and suspension. but it takes more than 1500RPMs to peel it. I was feathering the clutch at 3000RPMs and held traction as long as I didnt let it out too fast(it was cold) I got minor hop, but nothing too bad.

I get no wheel hop. even at the auto-x on an expecially agressive launch where I spun to redline through 1st and 2nd.

Outstanding times on the 1/4 Jim! Isn't it you that has the headers and exhaust from Billy Boat though? Or is that the other AZ guy?

No, that would be Ted who has the same car as mine, but has the 6MT (rather than the 5AT I have) with those exhaust mods. We are fellow members of the Arizona Desert Z Association. Regards, Jim

Default drags

No, I didn't because this was the first time at the strip w/the Z and I was primarily working on cutting good lights and a good launch combo. Next time I will be running for time rather than street trophy and I can relax more and then I will run manual to see how things shake out. Regards, Jim

It all boils down to preference. Some people choose the luxury of automatic transmission, while others, like myself prefer the manual transmission. I guess some enthusiasts are hyped up about the '6 spd.' tranny. All the features make the car absolutely stunning. RWD, 6spd.... resembles a Supra without the turbo. Surely this will be a SUPRA killer in NO time! Die Supra die!

I have an automagic Z too. I demolished all my manual cars in the past so I needed to take it easy. I'm glad to hear that automagic Z's can hold on there own.

Jim, what was the rpm at the finish line? Were you in the Z's max hp range?

Default RPM's

Ouch! I dunno what rpm I was turning at the finish because my full attention was on the two seperate set of lights at the end to first measure time and then the second set for mph. I didn't want to make a rookie mistake of shutting off when I tripped the first set at the end! Next time out I will be running for time & tune only (no intensive street trophy bracket competition as I did last Saturday) to enable me to fuss w/launch, watch things, try manual shifting and so forth and I will make note of when it last shifted and finishing rpm, etc.
Regards, Jim

Jim,

next time you go try the tiptronic mode and shift around 5900 rpm or so.

I'd be curious to see how the run goes when shifting a bit earlier than full auto mode.
