Default Manual shifting

Hi DJ, I will let you know what I find to be optimal. When running time and tune only, I can get in as many as 8 to 12 runs at least and by that time I should have things dialed in.
Last week I only got 4 runs all day long while in street trophy and the tension of running brackets against lots of fire breathing hot iron bearing down on you running in the 11's and a SVT in the 12's trying their best to nail you before hitting the shutoff was really draining! There is nothing quite like hearing an open exhaust Chevy Malibu running a modified 396 in the next lane as you FEEL him coming after you as you near the finish line. I was pooped by the time I redlighted against the SVT and called it a day. Made me mad tho, cause' I beat him when he broke out and only had a modified 57' chevy w/350 in it to take the street trophy. Oh, well, there's another day. I am thoroughly proud of the Z on our first day together on the track. . Regards, Jim

Jim,

next time you go try the tiptronic mode and shift around 5900 rpm or so.

I'd be curious to see how the run goes when shifting a bit earlier than full auto mode.

I'm sure this is repeatable. An automatic tranny will be easier to accomplish fast times in for most of us. Sure, a manual is in theory faster, but again, I hold to my principle that many people (some Z drivers included) really aren't good enough to achieve magazine times. I've never taken my Z to a track, and I spent my high school years burning up the streets in my 89hp auto '88 Civic LX, so I'm sure that my first few trips out, I'd post some crummy times.

I noticed you dropped your tire pressure to 28. I'm curious, did you mention to the 6MT driver to lower his tire pressure to 28, as you did? This can really help with wheel hop. His times may have improved considerably.

Just a thought.

I also have a 5MT. I went to the track for my first time 3 weeks ago and what a BLAST. I will admit that I was a little disappointed with my times though. I've got an AEM CAI, 5/16" Plenum spacer and Top Speed Pro-1 exhaust and my best time was 14.3. I guess with the mods I expected a little more. I do need to clean my air filter and i'm getting close to being due for another synthetic oil change,. They could have affected my times.....lol. Really, it was my first time and I need to lower my air pressure. I'm also going to remove the brake fuse so I don't lose 20% power on my launch. Also the temps that day were in the upper 90's. Does anyone think I should be breaking 14's with the few mods I have, lower tire pressure, and removing the brake fuse? Please assist.....thanks!

nice bump of an old post... but without the slip we can't really tell if your car is messed up. I.E. If you ran a 14.3@100mph and had a 2.6 second 60 foot you just need to work on your launches...

Your not losing power off the line power braking, the fuse mod only helps when really heating up the tires...

My bad on my earlier stated time. I ran a 14.5@98.7mph and a 2.17 60 foot. I feel with my few mods I should be right at 14. am I expecting to much?

Thanks for the time slip.

You are picking up 19 mph in the second 660 feet. I suspect that the temperature is 80 degrees plus and humidity is 70 percent plus. For 60 feet I would like to see 2.10 seconds. The 6.13 second 330 foot time is a dead giveaway: it shows the results of the first to second gear shift. I am not sure about a 14.00 second ET, but I see a 100mph trap in the near future (September).

that good time for you second time on the track. Your times listed is like my 1st few runs after visting the track and a few other mods, Im down to 13.9 @ 102 MPH using my 20" rims and everything in including the kitchen sink in the car.. includes spare tire, tools, carwash products, condoms and laptop

I launch at 1800 RPM and bang the rev limiter from 1st-2nd.

Did you really have to mention the condos and laptop, back to back. Thats gross man! lol!

Not bad times for an auto imj. Try cutting down the 60' a bit and your times will come down. Or you can just wait for the temp. to go down, and your times will follow suit.

Here are my times from tonight, I'm getting closer to my goal of 13.999. I dont think that is too much to ask with only a popcharger and exhaust 20" wheels and AT to top it off....

Exactly......While powerbraking (at the start line) figure out what RPM your at just before your tires break loose and thats real close to the RPM you should launch at.

PLEASE..PLEASE get that car to the U.S. somehow and get it tuned. That setup has so much more potential.
By the way what RPM are you launching at and are you only spraying out of the hole and then not spraying once the turbos start boosting.
