Default drag racing your Z without having to look for more horsepower

in the sixties i bot a number of off the shelf high powered cars...and i found the quickest and cheepest big bang for the accelaration buck...was by simply going to a big screw .....up to 5.29 rearend ratio i was using on the street....accelaration was awsome.....anybody know if different rearend ratios are available for the Z???????

Default Gears

As far as I know there are no gears (yet) available. As I drive the 5AT, I dropped in the 6MT rear gears (complete differential) a few weeks ago when I went thru Atlanta, GA. I was able to run it a few nights later at a strip in Fayetteville, NC. The 3.54's gave me my first 13's @ 13.9. The 5AT gears were 3.34's and I ran 14.102 at our Ariz. strip. I am very pleased to p/u those extra 2/10's as that is a huge gain, especially on the auto/touring package.
If you already have the 6MT than you have no gears yet available.
I hope to get back out to our Ariz. track tonight to see a true comparison with the lower gears in back. Regards, Jim

Does your AT pick up the 6th gear, or are you running without overdrive? Maybe that's an affordable mod for me if I do it at the same time I install a LSD in my G.

Default Gears

No, the 5AT is a 5 speed with slightly higher (numerically lower) tranny gearset ratios. By installing the differential (rearend) from the manual shift Z, I lowered the overall gear ratios, but it does not add another gear to the tranny. The 5AT remains a 5 speed. Regards, Jim

Default Differential swap

BTW, you cannot order just the ring and pinion for a manual shift car as it is slightly shorter than the AT and won't fit. You must install the entire differential. I located one from a wrecked Z in Atlanta that only had about 1,300 miles on it and since I was going thru there, I stopped in and had them do the changeout.
If you order it new it is $1,500, but I got mine for $400. Regards, Jim

Default Wheels

ezchief, I got your pm the other day asking about my wheels and I answered w/a return pm. If you didn't get it, here is the info from that pm. And thanks for the compliment on the wheels!

"These are new wheels and we just finished a magazine shoot featuring my car with them on. They are slated to be released in June or July, but you might inquire if they are available now or not. These are called Privat and the model of my wheels is called Fahren and they are a polished silver called Opal. These can be bought from Discount Tire and are called Privat/Fahren Opal. Mine are 18's and fit with Nitto Extreme 555's." Oh, they run a 1.5" lip in front and 2" lip in back. I like em' too! Regards, Jim

I decided to model this in Cartest2000 software (it's a very accurate acceleration modeling software) and here are the results. I used BriGuyZ's very strong stock dyno and have his 1/4 mile runs modeled almost perfectly. All I changed were the ratios:

Stock 3.54 gear:
13.94 @ 100.51mph

3.73 gear:
13.90 @ 100.98mph

4.10 gear:
13.84 @ 99.62mph

So a 3.73 gear helps about .04s and you gain about .5mph thru the traps which isn't bad if it can be done economically. A 4.10 would gain about .10s but you would lose a bit of trap speed because you would be shifting just as you go through the traps. This is all theoretical of course but I've found this software to be dead accurate. I've estimated to within about .03 seconds the times I would put down prior to doing ALL of my modifications, and it was dead on to the "real world" times I ran at the strip.

I'm definitely keeping the stock rear end.

TO GO FAST you must have enuff rear gear to be twistin 6k in 6th thru the eyes.....Ive held an NHRA et record....that my friend is wat it takes...inuf screw to use up all of the engines potential in the quarter...and be shure to shift each gear thru 5th at 4 k...no more then that...i had a mustang automatic 428 68 cobra jet...529 rear gear...twistin 8k thru the eyes ....justa cam ,,headers,, slicks and a 529 gear......best of luck...thinK BIG REAR GEAR

I run in Super Stock GT/GA (NHRA and IHRA) currently and I will tell you right now that none of this applies to a Z. Totally different purposes.
