Default Drag racing misconceptpion: "I pulled on the other car."

I wonder if people realize that when your car "pulls" on another car that it is not necessarily faster. Say for example off the line you get a .2 sec better reaction time and you are racing someone in an equal car. As your speed increases, the distance will grow even though the time is remaining a constant .2 seconds.

Watch an F1 race sometimes. As the cars brake for the turns, it always appears that the following car is catching up. As they accelerate off the corner, it appears the leading car is rocketing away. All the while the actual time between the cars is remaining pretty constant.

But when they hit it first and you "pull" by you definitely know you are "pulling"

That's right, the elapsed time difference measured in distance is a function of MPH. That's why a Top Fuel race at 320 MPH is not as close as a street car race at 85 MPH when both differences are, say, 0.3 seconds. But that has nothing to do with the term "pulling" in the street races sense of the term. The faster the race gets, the further ahead the winner gets. The loser gets pulled along. There are no timers on the street. It is all about the way the race is perceived.

exactly what i say, in terms of the equal cars, and one pulling another. if you started first, u are already in motion, and will continue to pull because if you both have equal power and ability, you are accerlating at the same pace the other guy did. so in effect you will never cacth up,. if im going 2 mph when u hit it, ill be 2mph ahead atleast alla time, with creates a bigger distance over time.

Yeah pulling in my mind means that if both cars WOULD eb dead even given = drivers, but i got a better launch, I am still "pulling" in that particular race.

And ANY TIME I say my cars is faster than another I mean MY car with ME driving Vs. THAT car with THAT driver

that's why it's always best to let the guy you are racing to take the first jump. no excuses when you win
