Default How can u guys explain this ?

ok, here's the story:
i went drag racing few days ago with a friend of mine.
He owns a 2006 EVO 9 with stock Turbo, turbo-back exhaust system, tune, and 1.4 Bar of boost.
my car got 400 bhp under the hood. my friend didn't dyno his evo, but he claims to have then 350-360 bhp.
anyways, we raced each other , from a roll, third gear and my vortech was in its powerband. ( RPM 4000 ).
we tried like 3-4 times, and each time he got away from me by 1 - 2 cars

So how can you guys explain this ? i mean i have 400 bhp, he has 350, how can he beat me ?

10x!

A drag racing thread without time slips is like a birthday cake without candles.

because you really dont have 400whp ??????

If he has 350whp and you 400whp...drivers arent going to make that big of a diff on a roll race

because youre vortech, so you have 400bhp and 320tq so youre really not making THAT much power. it worries me that you say you have 400bhp, so you really have no clue ie: you havent been on the dyno or tuned

evos are pretty quick with a stock turbo, but just for 1st through 4th, once they go to 5th, unless it is the shepherd ultimate ratio gear box which is freakin sweet, they will die down really bad, so let him put it into 5th and catch back up

same happens with my friends evo ix, he has a turbo back, k&n filter, and a ebc and tune. he will jump away all the time but ill catch back to him, and he makes 320 on a dyno jet and i make 357 on a dyno jet, but he still always gets that jump and i catch him at his 5th

Probably because the turbo powerband is MUCH better than the supercharger powerband.

The Evo is properly tuned and holds the same boost level till 5th gear,
plus he keeps pulling on every gear...
Peak350 you have a point.

The reason is that he probably reaks peak boost somewhere around 3k RPM's, you're reaching peak boost at redline. So although you make more peak HP, he makes a lot more peak torque (at a lower RPM) and then continues to make a good deal of it for most of his powerband. This results in faster acceleration through most of the gear, and is the reason turbo cars feel more brutal (because the torque comes on so fast).

It's not all about peak hp numbers, it's about powerband. Lots of things come into play in racing besides just hp number. CD, gearing, weight, powerband, rev limit, driver skill, etc.

Plus, he didn't even dyno his evo. You have no idea what you're up against. For all you know it could be making more power than you. This is silly.

He has MUCH more midrange TQ than your S/C set-up. He may also be a better driver. 2 cars even if the same weight and same peak power can have VERY different powerbands-resulting in one whooping the other's a$$ like you learned the hard way.

1. 4000 rpm is like 1 PSI vs 20psi on the evo
2. 4WD vs RWD from a slow roll he will always get a junp
3. Driver
4. Wont beat you in a 1/4 mile if bot have perfect driver, you will catch him top end.

1. Ok I'll take your word for it

2. They ran from a 3rd gear roll, a Vortech Z wont lose traction at 370whp in 3rd. If both cars have traction, AWD/FWD/RWD doresnt matter from an initial jump

3. Agree

4. You dont know that-thats an assumption
