After 3rd gear it's a dog?
A $70K car that can achieve 116-120mph in the 1/4 mile in stock form is pretty potent. Sure, you can boost an NA Z for a lot a less money, but let's see what your odds are and driveability is after adding 120whp+ to the stock motor and power train. Plus you have to consider the entire package that you get with the GTR. Add an ECU flash and it's potentially a 10-second car. Is that still weak or do you expect the car to run 9s to be considered not a dog. I'm pretty certain Cobb has a 10-second GTR in their hands and I believe it's doing 130mph in the 1/4 mile.
Actually yes! If you find one for $70k you should buy it up. They're selling here for over $90k. I have under $40k in my ENTIRE car and from a roll have already beat one on low boost. Driveability? I beat the **** out of mine and she's holding up fine. Some guys have been boosted on stockers for over 30k with no problems. It's remain to be seen how the GTR will hold up long term. Compared to my Z, the only reason it makes 11's in the 1/4 is the AWD. If my Z was AWD I would be too. Nice cars. I love them. Think they are absolutely beautiful. Just not worth what they cost. Z06 is WAY more car for the money street use wise. Just my .02
As for boosting a VQ35DE/RevUp, you're walking on egg shells. The motor simply can't handle boost for the long term. That's been shown over and over again. You can add all the safeguards and tuning as you desire, but in the end, they're all just band-aids prolonging the inevitable. To make a boosted VQ35 survive, you must go into the motor and spend some big bucks and pray to God you're builder knows VQs. The GTR powertrain is more than up to the task for the power. The clutches might get toasted, but overall the powertrain was designed for boost and a lot more of it. Sure, you can throw $40k into boosting a used Z, but you're still not going to have a GTR. There's so much more to the GTR than just it's straight line acceleration. So much more. A Z06 is definitely a super sweet ride, but mod for mod, dollar for dollar, it gets owned by the GTR. The GTR handles better, stops better, has 4 seats, a far nicer interior, better fit/finish, and all weather capability assuming you buy a set of snow tires/wheels. Looks wise and sound wise, I like the Vette. From a Thinking Man's standpoint, daily driver, one car ownership, the GTR is a steal.
Here in Kansas City, they go for sticker. There are 4 of them so far and all sold for MSRP.
