"Drag Strip" Does Not Equal "Track"?

Yes, but the REAL import scene was 1959-60 and Datsun/Nissan was not a player yet. And Nissan used the Datsun name on the 510 and Z, so that no one new who really made it.
59-60 had many many import cars flood into the US market. Simca, DKW, Isetta, Volkwagon (on a large scale) NSU/Wankle, Renualt and on and on. I can only speak for Cali, but the drag strips set up a class for them EC (economy car) and you did not see them road racing and autox was just emerging, so they were drag racing them. The NSU Prinz was the closest thing to a sports car other than the MG's, Austin Healey's,Jags, Porches etc, which were also racing at California drag strips. I am not sure what you guys in the east were doing other trying to copy Cali cars, but with disasterous results. (continental kits, mud flaps, fender skirts etc.)
Detroit countered with the Corvair, Falcon and Valiant. These cars were also in the EC class and dominated the imports, with the Valiant being the fastest in the stock form with a slant six. The corvair was right behind them and so on. None of these cars were designed for drag racing, but we car guys and girls race what we have and make it better. If you want to throw around import revolution etc. start at the beginniing and don't be selective about the information. Possibly this is just an age thing and you are not aware when the real import revolution started. in 59-60 there were probably over 20 overseas auto makers importing into the US. It was not successful as you can see by the emergence of the gas guzzling muscle cars of the mid 60's. You don't have to like it, but americans have drag raced every kind of car that they can get thier hands on. At least in the west.

I thought you weren't going to post about this any more!! Honor your promise! You're obviously right and apparently all of us slow-witted old guys will never see your superior line of reasoning, so you'd better take the "high road" and leave us to our ignorance. I wouldn't want you to bust a vein or something.

As a matter of fact, the Miata is one of the most prolific cars in SCCA racing today. Spec Miata is one of the very fastest growing classes, and is now a national pro series.
As usual, you're spouting off without having a clue as to what you're talking about. When you come at us with a logical, well thought-out argument we'll start to respect your opinion. Now you're just coming off as a punk-a$$ kid with a broken caps lock key and horrible grammar.
When confronted with a different point of view from your own, you respond with "NYAH NYAH I'M RIGHT AND 'YOUR' AN IDIOT>>>>>". Nobody is ever going to take you seriously. I'll be happy to keep toying with you though, it's easy and oh so entertaining!!!

This is not an important thing to me, I just thought you might want an old guys opinion since they were there.

Yes, it is an age thing. With the exception of the British sports cars (and there were very few), there were no imported cars. That is why I say that the beginning was in 59-60. There basically were no imported cars up to that time. If you want to say that honda started the second major resurgence of import cars, I might go for it, but then we would not even be talking about all those modded VW Bugs that were driving around before honda showed up.

AND MAYBE ITS BECAUE IM ALOT YOUNGER THAN YOU GUYS BUT I WAS THERE WHEN THE IMPORT STREET RACING SCENE STARTED IN ONTARIO, COMPTON, TERMINAL ISLAND, LONG BEACH. MAYBE YOU GUYS WERENT THERE TO SEE IT AND HAVE NOT KEPT UP WITH HOW THE IMPORT SCENE IS. SO THIS IS FROM A YOUNGER GENERATIONS POINT OF VIEW.
(REFERING TO THE YELLOW RX-JACKASS) AND ABOUT THE MIATA BEING RACED. I KNOW ABOUT THE MIATA, IT HANDLES GREAT AND THATS ABOUT IT. ITS NOT MUCH TO LOOK AT AND THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO RACE THOSE CARS ARE OLDER FOLKS LIKE YOU TOO. (IM NOT TALKING TRASH, ITS THE TRUTH.) GO TO A MIATA MEET AND ALL YOU REALLY SEE IS OLDER FOLKS. AND THE ONLY MAZDA THAT ARE REALLY INVOLVED IN THE IMPORT SCENE IS EITHER THE OLD SCHOOL ROTARIES OR RX-7 & RX-8 (AND THE RX-8 SUCKS) SO LIKE I SAID THEY ARE NOT A VERY POPULAR CAR THAT IS RACED IN THE IMPORT SCENE. (1/4 = IMPORT SCENE)
MAYBE YOU TOO SHOULD LOOK AT ALL THE TOP IMPORT MAGAZINES AND LOOK AT ALL THE CIVICS THAT HAVE BEEN FEATURED......
YOU GUYS NAME ALOT OF CARS BUT YOU CANT DEFEND THE FACT THAT THE CIVIC WAS MORE POPULAR THAN EVERY CAR YOU HAVE MENTIONED. WHEN I CHALLENGE YOU GUYS ABOUT THE POPULARITY OF THE CARS YOU NAME, U CHANGE THE SUBJECT AND NAME ANOTHER CAR. THE CIVIC HAS ITS PART IN HISTORY. OR AT LEAST IN MY "IMPORT REVOLUTION" HISTORY.
SO IM GONNA LEAVE IT AT THAT. THINK WHAT YOU GUYS WANT. AND I WILL DO THE SAME. ITS REALLY JUST MY OPINION.
P.S. SLEEP WITH ONE OF UR EYES OPEN RX-JACKASS IM GONNA COME TAKE UR MANHOOD AWAY

You've changed your point to the fact that "THE HONDA CIVIC TOOK THE IMPORT SCENE TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL" and I don't think anyone could argue with that. In terms of widespread popularity and aftermarket saturation this is most likely true. All I took issue with was you saying, "THE "IMPORT REVOLUTION" was the source of all sports car comebacks and is the only reason we have the cars that we have today". That just isn't true.
Historically, teenage kids are into/modding/racing whatever relatively inexpensive, easy-to-find car or truck that had saturated the new car market about 10 years prior. Remember the mini-truck craze? About 10 years after the explosion of the mini truck onto the market. Every mullet-topped, molester-moustached kid in the late '70s had a '67-9 Camaro, and so on and so forth. Today it's the civic, which will eventually be supplanted by something else...
Now, if you feel like replying, try to do it without the personal attacks and you'll be a welcome member of the board.

that is where you are now Duma. Enjoy it and lighten up. I go to the NOPI events and I also see the Hondas getting blown away by caveliers and Saturns, but there is no doubt that hondas have a place in the US car scene. They are good cars.

Honda did not try to emulate those sports cars with their Civic, teens did that themselves. There are so many body kits that make a Civic look like a <insert sports car here> that it's crazy. As fowlman said, teenagers modified Civics because they could afford them. Every teenager who modified his/her Civic did so because that was what they had available to them at the time. If they could have gone out and bought ZR1s for the same amount of money they paid for their Civics, I'm sure that 99% of them would have gone that way. Civics are very, very popular because of their affordability and the plethora of inexpensive mods that are available for them, so many young enthusiasts start off with a Civic and then, when they have real jobs, graduate to a car that's more performanced-based out of the box. This popularity assures that many, many people will be looking for things regarding the Civic, so it's no surprise that the editors cater to their audience. This is not because the Civic is the best car in the import scene (although it is very, very capable when modded correctly), this is because it is the most popular car in the import scene. It's simple economics. If the import magazines focused on the, say, NSX rather than the Civic, it would not sell as many copies of that issue as one that focused on a more popular car, like the Civic, 350Z, RX7/8, Celica, etc. I completely agree with Duma that the Civic is a great car for the price and has had a large influence on the import scene over the years especially as it has evolved over the last decade or so; if he would just not be personally offended by a simple debate (and would turn the caps lock off) things would run a lot more smoothly.
