Default Heading to the 1\4 tonight with new plenum.. Kinda nervous..

Last time I went to the track with intake, exhaust I ran a 14.0 with a junky 2.3x 60' with wheel hop all the way thru 1st gear. It was bitter sweet, I only managed a 14.0 but did it with a bad 2.3 60'.

Now the nerve racking part. I am gonna be pissed off bad if I go up and run a worse time with the plenum. All I want is to run consistant high 13's even with crappy 60's.. It feels good on the butt dyno with the plenum but I have been fooled before and I know my luck.. I just don't want to be dissappointed and I almost don't wanna go up for fear of running crappy times and being let down.

Bottom line, if I don't do better then a 13.7 with about a 102 trap tonight with around a 2.1 60' I am gonna hang up my modding for good since its not getting me anywhere without FI.. I managed a 13.98 with just an intake (w\ a 2.04 60'), and after installing an exhaust and plenum I demand to see results!

Can any anybody give some encouragement? My only hope tonight is heating up my tires alot before running so I can make good 60 foot times which I have not done in the past.. I am gonna feel so defeated if I run bad times with good 60's with these mods..

well you have to take into account for atmospheric conditions, they can affect your et greatly

I personally have given up on the cheapo mods for now. I went to the track stock and ran the times in my sig. Then I went to the ATCO meet and ran a best of 14.1 @ 97 mph with a Z-tube, underdrive pulley, Kinetix plenum, and K&N filter. I was thoroughly disapointed. Now I am hanging around the Nitrous forum because I want to be deep into the 13's without spending an arm and a leg.

I also checked the atmospheric conditions on the two different days and the first time I ran, corrected HP was 101.3% and at atco is was about 99% so there wasn't enough difference to lose 5 mph!!! THat equates to about a 50 hp loss!! I am thinking that the other track I ran at must only be 1200 feet instead of the standard 1320!!!

LOL..

See thats what I am afraid of, a big let down.. Also to make matters worse I have a bunch of guys going up with me and they are probably expecting good things from me too.. I just don't want to look stupid. I'll settle for a 13.8 with a 2.2 60'

Why are you aiming for 2.1 and 2.2 60ft's...thats $hit. If you hit a 2.0 stock you can do it again. I'm gonna call a 2.1x 60ft and a 13.8 @ 101...let us know how it goes and good luck.

I didn't say I was aiming for that, I said i'd settle for it. I am aiming for 2.0xx. Hopefully if I manage a 2.0xx it will get me a 13.6xx. Then i'll be happy

Either way i'll post the results tonight or tomorrow morning.

Wow I'm surprised at your time 14.1@97. I also was at Atco and managed a 14.0 and 13.9 both @99mph bone stock! You should be in the high 13s easy with those mods!?

good luck, brother. But don't stress, man. don't run for the track monkeys who are watching. run because you enjoy getting pushed back into the seat. run because ou love your car. **** a 13. i see dudes in modded sentra's running 15's all day long at the track here in fayetteville and loving it because they put effort into it. And i see guys in Z06's kicking their own a$$es over times that THEY DON'T THINK are quite good enough.
It's supposed to be fun, man.

Arrow UPDATE

Hey ChuckGZ.. Thats a good way to look at it!!

Well here's the UPDATE, first 2 runs, tire pressure was 30psi, last 2 they were at 27psi.

I don't have my time slips with me right now at work.. But basically I got in 4 runs and the track conditions were kinda bad.. Alot of people were complaining about their 60' foots.

The good news..

My traps were deffinately improved.. Last time out to the track without the plenum in similar weather and track conditions (high 70's, low 80's) my best trap in 3 runs was 99.91. Last night I managed to get over 101mph 3 out of 4 runs. Best being 101.36

The not so good news..

My 60' were just wrong all night.. First 2 runs I dropped a bit too fast resulting in wheel hop\spinning after a very light burn out. These runs resulted in a 2.27&2.29 60' and 1\4 was 14.1@101.36 and 14.1@101.2

Next run I did a heavy burn-out and did the same launch. Seem to grip much better but that caused me to bog and just roll out of the hole with a 2.25 60' - Figured I needed to Launch harder next time.

Last run, Heavy burnout, launched about 3700 because I figured the heat will make it grip better and I can go higher then my usual 2800ish. This one went badly, I think I slipped the clutch out way too fast and ended up spinning my wheels up hard out of the hole and had to let off in 1st and that run was useless, 2.38 60'..

Best run of the night was 14.1@101.36 with a 2.275 60'

Other info regarding the plenum.. I noticed my car felt a bit flat at lower RPMs since the install, I only had it a week and I have noticed it pulls much harder at higher RPMs but seems a bit flat under 3500 in everyday driving. This was evident mostly in my run where I kinda bogged off the line, almost felt like a tiny bit of turbo lag. My AEM filter is a bit beat up and dirty so maybe this is the answer.

Overall I am somewhat happy since I gained speed in my traps, but like I said it seems a bit flat at lower RPMs (Filter??) with is deffinately effecting my ETs. Next time I go up I am gonna have some drag radials, I can't deal anymore with the hole shot. If I can manage a 1.8-1.9 or so with some sticky tires I should be around 13.6.

Can anybody reccommend a pair of ideal drag radials and size for the Z to buy? I don't have a clue as to what brand and size I should get.

BTW. Thanks for the encouragement guys! Its was overall a fun night..

As long as you had fun thats good. Your trap is decent, just need to get your 60ft down to your 2.0 goal and you'll be 13.7's easy...

YOu can just go with the Nitto Drag radials since they come in the right size fo rthe 17" wheels. IF you have 18" wheels, I think they make them for that size as well. IF you can find some Mickey Thompson ET streets in that size (I doubt they make them in 17's and 18's), they would be a better bet. Go with some 245 to 265s on 17" wheels (though the 265 is really pushing it, you will only have a contact patch of a 245 or so.....

Keep the pressures around 25 psi to start and launch at 5000 rpms just stepping off the clutch. If you get some spin, you might want to lower it to 23 or 22 psi (the Nittos).

If you are on ET Streets, you can go really low with the pressures on these to get them to hook up. SOmetimes as low as 15 psi. Just be sure to have some type of air with you to refill the tires since they get squirrily at high speeds for the drive home.

Awesome thanks for the info!! I will start looking..

Its so hard to find a happy medium with street tires. But I am gonna grab some drag radials before I race again, I had enough of this nonesense. I wanna just drop the clutch at 5k and be done with it, I did better with my stock Potenzas then I am doing now.

I just took a look and discounttiredirect.com sells the Nitto drag radials. The BFGoodrich only come in 15" rim sizes and I couldn't find the Mickey Thompson (I think www.summit.com has them). They are about $150 for 245-45-17 tires and about $160 for 275-40-17 so you can make a choice with that. A friend of mone had the Nitto's on 17x8 rims in 275 size and had no problems with bulging or anything. He could pull off consistent 1.9x 60's and some 1.8's every once in a while. Another friend had the MT ET Streets and was getting 1.6 60's but he was also running 12.3 @ 109. The ET Streets are the closest thing to a real drag tire while the Nittos 'could' be driven with every day. If it rains with the ET Streets, you are stuck on the side of the road!

Well I have the stock 18's.. I gotta see if they got em in thats size. I already have a spare 18 stock rim, if I can just get another I can just keep the drag radials on them and swap rims when it comes race day.

I'll check out the site for 18's.. Thanks again for the help!

EDIT: Not good, the only 18's Nitto has are 305/45R-18 Now what... Am I gonna have to buy a pair of ugly 17" rims ? LOL

Well, you can do what I am doing....I am going to try to buy a set of mustang 17" wheels and use the drag radials on them. The bolt pattern in the same, but the hub diameter on our car is smaller. Some people say it is fine, others say you need a hub ring. I called tirerack and they said they couldn't help me with a hub ring since they don't sell the wheels and don't want to be liable. I am going to try discounttiredirect and see if they have anything to say or can help me!!

If you are looking for wheels, check out www.corral.net for the mustang wheels.
