Default What kind of LSD is good for DRIFTING?

I was wondering what brand LSD is good for drifting? Is a Quaife ATB LSD a good choice? What brand do you guys recommend. Budget is ~$1500.

I have the Quaife, and this is one of the few time I wouldn't recommend it. I think you would be better served with a clutch-type diff.

The Quaife is always looking for traction and sending power to the wheel with the most grip. It's awesome on the track but I would think that a diff that locks, and stays locked, would be best for drifting.

The Quaife is good for autocrossing, you asked what LSD is good for "drifting."

OOps, my first time joining a forum. I have to be more specific. I autocross with a stock prelude, but I just bought an 03' base model 350Z, and now I really want to start drifting. It was kinda hard drifting with a FWD. Just a$$ dragging really. I just installed a performance clutch/flywheel (throw-out bearing dried up) and now I'm looking for the proper LSD. Gotta start somewhere, right? HELP!!!

so you've never drifted before?

they have manuals to get started that go over all of this stuff (as a resource for you).

a good type is the Nismo LSD pro 1.5 clutch type. but a 2 way Kaaz is probably optimal as you get more agressive characteristics in both accel and deccel.

but a diff isn't where you want to start. go to a drift day or two before buying anything. GO TO IT!!!

and enjoy the Z

I disagree with the statement that a diff isn't where you want to start. A limited slip diff is an absolute must have for drifting. However I do agree that the Nismo LSD good diff. Probably the best bang for the bang for the buck if you have a base model Z. The kaaz is really nice too. Good luck

An LSD is very important to drifting but I recommend also getting some seat time at a track where it is safe to drift. Learn to use the e-brake and get some constructive instruction on how to drift.

Just my 2 cents

Yeah, technique and practice is important. I need both. But I am definitely going to get an LSD. Running peg legged is not cool. My rear tires are wearing unevenly. Question, whats the difference between the 1.5 clutch type and the 2 way. What does that mean? Which one is easier to maintain? Or should I google it. It's kinda funny, I can install the LSD myself, but I dont know what it exactly does. -_-

I would google it.

and you can build a rear differential assembly yet do not know how to maintain it or what it is?

comeon man... just understanding the difference between 1.5 & 2 way is essential to being able to build a rear diff.

the 'ways' the limited slip functions are under acceleration input and decceleration forces. because it is a mechanical action it is set and constant for the most part.

any clutch type differential is 'adjustable' if you play around with the plate directions.

so did you mean simply installing a built pumpkin or assembling it? I am still confused as to how you can build a diff yet ask these questions

like motormouth said...knowing is half the battle.

but IMO if you want a good lsd for drifting then i would def go with the 2 way kaaz.

Installing and troubleshooting only. Father has a shop, kinda was forced to do it at a young age, now I love it. Hehe, I installed my first supercharger without even knowing how it worked (BOLT ON!) Hey read the bottom of the page on the website about LSD I just posted. It has some comparisons between NISMO and KAAZ and CUSCO LSD designs. You might want to check it out. Dont know how legit it is. Makes me wanna invest in a KAAZ or CUSCO. Waddaya think? Pretty convncing. http://www.club4ag.com/faq%20and%20t...ential_101.htm

I cannot comment on the article, but it sounds like it could be legit maybe... I have a Nismo diff. I know alot of tuners in japan also use the Nismo 1.5 pro diff I have as well in Time attack and what not so I doubt they are inferior.

Cusco makes a nice diff as well, and I would suggest posing the question to Z-1 Auto in NY as they are a very large Cusco dealer and could probably give you some insight.

I love the Nismo diff I have and it is a drop in for the Base model Diff. some others require additional parts that the Nismo is supplied with. I think Performance Nissan (mynismo) offers a kit with the parts, but I could be wrong.

good luck and be safe. read read read read read!
